How do fellow jellies feel about Flying Dog Brewery's problems with marketing its Raging Bitch brand in some states?

Asked by anartist (14808points) March 29th, 2011

A lawsuit has been filed [or the first of several] Flying Dog vs Michigan challenging right of states to refuse to allow a brand to be sold because of its name. What do you think?

I think this ban should be further challenged by marketing a brand called Pedigreed Bitch.

I suppose they can call their product whatever offensive sexist thing they can but yes they should be challenged, because they are, creatively so.

Meh. Seems rather ridiculous when you can buy “Jugs” and “Barely Legal” behind the counter at every convenience store. Let the free market decide. The lowbrow can buy it, the rest of us will ignore it.

Well, reading the article, it appears that the commission is well within it’s rights:

The commission has the authority to disapprove any beer label submitted for registration “that is deemed to promote racism, sexism, intemperance or intoxication, or to be detrimental to the health, safety or welfare of the general public,” said Sharon Martin, director of licensing for the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.

Unless the label also include a picture of a female dog and her pups, I think it’s pretty easy to argue “sexism”. Although I find it amusing that alcohol labels aren’t supposed to promote intemperance or intoxication, either.

It makes me want to buy one in case it gets pulled from the shelves. It’s amazing how much money brewery items go for on eBay.

I should sue them, too, for copyright infringement.
They copied part of my name after all

Maybe they should just change it to “Raging Bastard” and see what kind of response that gets :)

And I forget which state they’re in (I think its Nevada?) but Alice Cooper’s Restaurant can apparently get away with selling a foot-long hotdog and calling it “Randy Johnson’s Unit” with nary a raised eyebrow.

Go figure…

What a bunch of stupid fuckers.

Maybe they should just retry again later… at a different time of the month, perhaps.

I’m not a raging bitch so I really don’t care what the beer is called. It’s just beer.

Well looky here

@syz Actually it’s very good beer if you like beer. Flying Dog makes about 10 different brews, all with interesting names [e.g. Doggy Style pale ale, In Heat wheat, Old Scratch amber etc,] And the artwork on the materials is done by Ralph Steadman and there are quotes from Hunter Thompson on the packaging.
