Why am I suddenly getting dozens of invites to Linkedln?

Asked by TexasDude (25274points) May 24th, 2011

For the past two weeks, I have been getting literally dozens of invites from people I go to school with to “join their professional network on Linkedln.” I have never even been to the Linkedln website… hell, I only vaguely know what it is, so why am I all of a sudden getting all these emails from them?

Anytime someone joins Linkedin an automated spam bot sends out notices to everyone on their contact list. The spam bot also send out notices to everyone who signs up with various job search sites.

@YARNLADY, ah, ok. I guess a bunch of people I know just signed up or something. Thank you!

Might have something to do with the recent Linkedin IPO being introduced into the market.

It’s the first social networking stock, and the stock went up 174% on opening day which became one of the top 3 stocks on the market.

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks!

@lawkes :: That was my first thought too. Now I will shut up about a company that made 12 million last year being valued at 8 billion. Bubble 2.0

Getting close to graduation? LinkedIn is the rolodex of the business world and the best way to keep your resume current. Their groups aren’t all that great, but for keeping yourself organized and visible…It’s like what myspace.com used to be like to musicians.

I have been getting them too @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard. Shrugs… perhaps it is just coincidence. Maybe they are having a bit of a run on trying to increase their membership?

They do have a feature where they will scan a user’s address book, and send an invitation to everyone in their book. Perhaps that’s what’s going on. It’s a yes/no question, and it’s skewed towards yes.

This is a really good question: I’ve suddenly received a lot more invites too, and all from people who I’m sure are FB friends with each other. I’m not really interested in combining my Facebook friend list (personal and familial) with my LinkedIn network, so I’ve been declining most of them. But they must have done some sort of recent email push.
