Why do I care about things that don't concern me?

I seem to get bothered very easily these days. Work has been stressful, and it’s hard when you work super hard and someone in a different section (but same area) has barely anything to do daily, so they laugh it up all day and kiss butt to their supervisors, so they think their worker is a “star.”

Everyone knows co-workers know how people REALLY work, rather than their supervisors. I don’t know why it bothers me so much, especially when I hear the person praising themselves and talking as if they’re the best employee on the face of the planet, when it isn’t nearly true. They’re irritable, un-empathetic and not supportive of their co-workers.

They will pass on work to me, and it makes me angry every time since it isn’t MY job – but nothing ever changes, seems the people above them only look out for their team.

What do you suggest I do? I try to not get angry but I really dislike hypocritical people. I know I can’t expect them to be like me, think my thoughts or do my actions, my expectations and attitudes are different. It’s just… hard.

If what they’re giving you to do isn’t in your job description, then don’t do it. It’s upsetting you that you have to pick up the slack when they hardly do anything, so don’t. Tell them, “I’m sorry, but I have too much to do here and I really can’t afford to take this on as well.” If they really are doing nothing all day, then taking back their work and actually doing it shouldn’t be that hard.

If the work they are giving you is not part of your job description, go to your supervisor and ask, very bewilderedly, “How do I fit this task in, which was given me to do by X with all of my regular work? Which has priority?”

He’s at the bottom of the chain and others will give him the work they do not like [ or when they are lazy enough OR just feel like it ] .

There’s no easy to way not to get angry in this situation . You either go make a complain to your boss [ not your supervisor but the bosses’s boss ] . Or you just look for another workplace.

A few years ago I had a community like this at work but after I complained to the boss he changed things . You might get lucky too .

I am in the military, I can’t do any of these… my team has already tried to get this fixed with no luck. We are told to suck it up. I’m just trying to figure out how not to get upset too much.

Look at it like this: there’s only so much you can do in a 7 hour day or 8 hour day or however long your workday is. The workday is like a pie. If you have many tasks, each piece of the pie is small (meaning less time can be devoted to each task). If you have less tasks, each piece of the pie is larger (meaning more time can be devoted to each task).

Focus on your own job and tasks. Stay away from worry of others as it will not help you.
