Isn't there a way to pick and choose your channels and just pay for those with the cable companies?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) July 3rd, 2011

Why have HBO, Showtime, and Cinema when you can’t even watch them or don’t watch them. For me, I have to subscribe or pay extra to watch a movie on these channels but yet I still have the channels on my guide. I don’t even want them on there in the first place.

I don’t watch a lot of tv but I do like the news channels, TBS, TLC, Travel, Food, and Cartoon networks.

If I could just pick these channels and pay for only these channels, I’d be better off.

It’s called MONOPOLY @AshlynM. And if you find a way around it, let me know. The cable company has a monopoly on the area they serve. There is no competition whatsoever. Thus you get what the cable company wants you to have at the price they want you to pay.

@plethora is right. This is the reason I stopped watching TV about a decade ago. I’ve often wondered if the cable companies would make money enough just because people would keep on adding “just one more channel”.

I’d love to do this. Sadly, the cable company wants to make more money than they would if I just bought Discovery, History, Comedy Central, and FOX Sports, so I can’t buy any cable at all.

Netflix has been my answer to cable. For less than $20.00 I have unlimited instant viewing of their online library of movies and tv shows. Once I learned cable series went to Netflix, I felt avenged against the cable companies, a little bit.

Cable Co.‘s have it rigged so they make the most money. You are to be deluged with ads from all those useless channels that you never watch. You don’t like the 700 club?, skip over it the way i do. I would only get about 5 or 6 channels if it was allowed but they wouldn’t be able to make any $ off cheap bastards like me.

There should be a basic package that has only the channels that you want on it.

There are several levels of choice, but not pick and choose the channels you want.

No there isn’t a way right now. I cut cable 2 years ago and sticking with Netflix and Hulu for shows I really like. That’s 25 bucks a month combined. Of course there are shows on cable I can’t get but those were 1 or 2 that I could live without. The news I just get from the internet.
