How often do you find a song sung by the same sex as you romantic?

Asked by poisonedantidote (21680points) July 5th, 2011

If you are gay, how often do you find a song sung by the opposite sex romantic?

For some reason, It is very hard for me to find songs sung by males to be romantic, I usualy need to hear a female voice for me to find it romantic.

There are very few exceptions, Toploader – Dancing in the moonlight being one of those exceptions.

How about you?

George Michael was quite cute, before his jack off in the toilet days ;¬}

I don’t think the sex of the performer affects my ability to find a song romantic. That’s never even occurred to me, actually.

I’m with @FutureMemory here, I’ve never really thought about it. Now that I do I would probably say the vast majority of the most romantic songs I know are sung by men and I’m a man, last time I checked.

It is very interesting that @FutureMemory and @RareDenver don’t know what I’m talking about. From talking to a couple of close friends of mine, I was expecting you guys to be a minority.

It may be interesting to note that I used to be a homophobic bigot in my early teens, around about when I started to develop a taste in music. Those of you who know me will know that I’m no longer a homophobe, so perhaps romantic songs sung by men is something I have to look forwards to.

I also have a very strong imagination, music is always acompanied with pictures, the song dancing in the moonlight does not cunjure up any male images for me, I see my self dancing in the moonlight with someone, and I get flashes of an entire crowd dancing at night on the beach to the song.

Who knows whats going on, lets get some more answers :)

For me it’s all about context/association.

For example, the musical group that was always playing in the backgound when my first girlfriend and I were fooling around is extremely romantic to me. The fact that the vocalist is male is inconsequential.

I find Tony Bennett songs to express my inner romantic feelings, in the best possible way.
But I never wondered to myself what Tony must be like in bed.

Yes, I find songs sung by men to be romantic. I don’t really think of songs as being sung to me, though, and often put myself in the position of the singer.

poisonedantidote's avatar

@SavoirFaire I fear singing more than waking up next to a cobra/pitbull combo, I would not picture my self as a singer ever.

I just identify with the singer. I find many songs sung by women romantic.

Often. A lot of female singers sound to me like liquid sex – Bif Naked, Tegan and Sara, Kim Shattuck of The Muffs (now that’s sex on a stick if I’ve ever heard it!). As for romance without the sex, Leslie Feist is pretty great, along with about a million other ladies.

I find many songs sung by men to be romantic because they express my feelings towards a woman. They give voice to my emotions, they are not professing love to me!

When I hear Mark Knopfler sing “you and me, babe, how ‘bout it?” I don’t hear him singing to me but to a woman.

Freddy Mercury was romantic [ a bit ] in some songs . Viva Queen !!

Wow, I honestly hadn’t really thought of this before…when I think about it, I find just as many songs to be romantic by men as I do by women. I listened to the Unplugged version of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon last night. Simply wonderful ^.^

Elvis, Pavarotti, Bocelli, Dean Martin and Sinatra are 5 that are tops on my list

It certainly is possible. It’s not like you are being romantic with the singer.
You feel the emotions in the lyrics and music.
Focus on the lyrics and music and not so much the singer’s visual image in your mind and you might find it romantic to you.
It is also going to vary depending on the genre’ Start with Standards like Nate King Cole, Johhny Mathis, etc…

All the time. I have no clue that this kind of thing even existed.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Not very often but that’s because there are few female (I’m female) vocalists I’m a fan of that still make music today.

MilkyWay's avatar

As long as they sing with emotion and feeling, and have a nice voice, I don’t really care. They just have to sing romantically.

flutherother's avatar

Very rarely, George Michael maybe and even Scott Walker.

I’ve never thought about this before, but I find songs sung by both men and women to be romantic. Then again I’m bisexual…

Haleth's avatar

Wow, maybe there’s something to this. I’m bisexual, and I think songs sung by both men and women are romantic. Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison, Mazzy Star, and Jose Gonzales are my favorite “romantic” sounding artists, and it’s a completely even mix. WTF.

I’m a straight female, but it never even occurred to me that I wouldn’t be emotionally effected by both male and female voices. The song and the singer’s voice are what is important, not their sex. To me, that is just such a weird concept. Good music is good music, no matter what sex is doing the singing.

My favorite romantic female singers include Shania Twain, Alicia Keys, Norah Jones, Sarah Brightman, Petula Clark, Astrud Gilberto, Eartha Kitt, Lea Michelle, KD Lang, Whitney Houston, and Julie Andrews.

My favorite romantic male singers are Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Bono, Brian Wilson, Michael Buble, Andrea Bocelli, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Nat Cole, The Backstreet Boys, Boy George and Robert Smith.

It doesn’t matter to me. I’ve never even thought about it before. I find the idea to be very odd. I find certain songs sung by both male and/or female are romantic.

I agree with most others on their answers. @Kardamom said it well, Good music is good music, no matter what sex is doing the singing.

@MilkyWay That song is wonderful! So are “Lovestain” and “Hints.”
