How does one make enough money to support oneself while traveling?

Asked by FluffyChicken (5516points) July 8th, 2011

As some of you know, in August I am going on a road-trip with an indefinite destination and and indefinite amount of time. While I am traveling, I will need to pay for gas, insurance, food, my phone bill, and I’m sure a few other things.

I intend to sell my crocheted hats while I am on the road. What are some other good ways to generate an income while on the road?

I am so happy to hear about your plan. And by happy I mean jealous!

There are two stories I love from a bicycle email list. I can’t find the links, but anyway they’re more just to inspire rather than specific suggestions for you.

One was a guy who towed a lawn mower behind his bike, traveling from town to town and yep, mowing lawns to finance the trip.

The other guy had a set of stencils for interior decorating, they were popular for Victorian houses. He biked around and knocked on doors with a picture portfolio of his work. When he was hired he’d buy paint and camp out in the yard until the job was done.

Cheerio!

Write, photograph, video your travels and post the articles to magazines. Keep the rights to resell to other magazines. You can make anywhere from $50—$500 each time it runs, and you can sell it to as many magazines as you wish. Curios Japanese are just as interested in the Grand Canyon as curious Americans are interested in Mt. Fuji. You can sell your articles abroad too.

To supplement your money, you can dumpster dive, forage, and make friends with nice people who will feed you. Fellow Jellies might be good for that.

Depending on how long you stay in one place, you could visit the temporary, day job agencies.

Street musician. Draw/paint local landscapes and sell on street. Grifting.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies has a good idea and is right about not limiting yourself to US publications, make a list of publications overseas too. Do some research before you leave. @GladysMensch isn’t grifting deceiptful? I don’t know, we don’t use that term here but I always thought it was related to conning people?
