Does the internet alter sexual politics to the detriment of attractive women?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) July 27th, 2011

I flirt a great deal with a particular Fluther woman. A few minutes ago, she mentioned, and we have often discussed, she is very physically attractive.

It came up in conversation how often women send me flirtatious PM’s. It happens to me more often then men send those to her.

She has a theory that the physical blindness changes sexual politics to the advantage of men. I was curious as to any thoughts as to the veracity of that theory members of the fluther community may have.

People lie about how they look all the time on the internet. I bet she is ugly.

But I do think that women are more likely to make the first move online, and looks matter less here.

It could go either way I guess. Some women patently state they would rather have a butt ugly guy with a great personality than an attractive mediocre guy, but some people still want to see the exterior before looking inside.

Things like smarts, wit and charm are certainly more salient when you can’t see the physical form and it is easy to form a crush and flirt on the internet. I wouldn’t say this hurts physically attractive people unless they haven’t developed these other skills as well, but it is certainly an advantage to the less attractive. I do think you would still want to see the person and find out if there’s chemistry before going too far into a relationship.

What @janbb wrote. I agree completely that you can’t get around nature- physical attraction will most likely still be a good part of the equation. I’ve fallen in love with a person not seeing them until much later and the physical was just icing on the cake. In another instance, I fell in love with a person after I got around their physical appearance because of their outstanding mental and social abilities.

I some times go on a site called chatroulette, if I come across a really attractive girl, I instantly hit the next button. Usually I do so thinking “Stupid 12yo boy trying to trick me in to thinking he is a hot woman”, however that is not the only reason I do it, I do it because I go on that site looking for interesting conversation, and while I do like attractive girls, I rather spend my time talking to a different kind of girl or even like minded guy. Some times a girl will have both looks and brains, and maybe I’m just being stereotypical, but it’s still what I do.

She mentions she’s physically attractive, like randomly? LOL. Anywho, I don’t think your premise is true.

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir what are you thinking? Please expand.

I think people, regardless of gender or level of attractiveness, basically remain the same on the internet, just less inhibited or a bit more exaggerated…but they’re still themselves…so it’s not like men all of a sudden are more attractive just because your friend thinks you get more PMs. I get more PMs that are flirty when my avatar changes, so what? Doesn’t mean anything.

I don’t agree with your friend. Attractive people have the advantage in real life; the internet just levels the playing field.

Obviously @athenasgriffin hasn’t seen the Fluther photobucket. Most of the women here are beauties!

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

@SpatzieLover Agreed. The one woman here who I have seen a picture of was shockingly beautiful when she accidentally sent me a photo (and is likely dying of embarrassment somewhere).

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought Some of them should seriously give modeling a consideration
