How long do you keep down pillows for?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 13th, 2011

Do down pillows last decades? How long do you keep them for?

I ask because I have had mine for about 10 years, and I have washed them several times, and am wondering what is the criteria for discarding them, if any.

Can’t keep a good pillow down! No seriously? As long as they still feel fluffy and comfortable, you can keep them.

As long as the pillow feels the way you want it to, and has been properly cared for (washed and dried).

I think I’ve had mine for 20 years plus now. They are my down pillows. Do they go bad? Geese would go bad, if I slept with them for twenty years but I don’t think the down does. Anyway, you can have mine when you tear them from my cold dead hands. They’re just getting broken in.

I keep mine for a couple of years or so and then I tend to replace them. Apart from the fact that they lose their shape, fluffiness etc., I remember watching an Oprah programme about what is in your pillows. So even after they are washed… I just prefer to replace fairly regularly. Link

Yonks….which in Brit-speak means: Longer than I can remember! (I bought really good quality ones…I wanted them to last…and so far, so good.)

You can keep a down pillow as long as it will still plump up.
If it stops plumping, it’s dead. Give it a nice send-off.
Invite friends to a pillow fight, BYOP.

If you use a good pillow cover, and wash it, etc., I’d think you could keep using them forever, as long as they still feel good to you.

One of mine is about 20yrs old now and still fine. It came with a very tight weave inner cover and zipper outer cover. It’s been washed, hung out in the sun, beaten and beaten and still, it’s wonderful. At the time it was very expensive to me but over the years, after pricing different down pillows then I see the difference in construction of the covers and am convinced my investment was good.
