What is wrong with Hooters?

Asked by MacBatman31 (2043points) August 24th, 2011

So many people have a problem with Hooters Restaurants, and I do not see why.
I keep hearing that it is degrating to women, but the women show less there than a girl in a thong, on the beach would show. There are only female servers there, and I just don’t see how Hooters is so bad.
Maybe its the testosterone that courses through my veins, and I’m not trying to offend anyone. I am simply asking for discussion purposes only.
If you have a problem with Hooters, what is it, and why? Please explain, I’m curious.

Would you wear itty-bitty shorts and work at a place called “Weiners”?

King_Pariah's avatar

Uh, no issue here, just wishing on a greater variety of hooters… But I know someone who has issues because it’s not kid friendly. It’s hooters for crying out loud, it’s not supposed to be “kid friendly”

Objectification is wrong IMO, plain & simple.

MacBatman31's avatar

@syz If you are asking me personally, no I wouldn’t, mainly because I’m too fat. But I’m sure men who are fit enough to do so, would. I mean there are male strippers in this world, and in today’s economy, I could see someone taking the job.

King_Pariah's avatar

@syz I wouldn’t mind. I sport speedos often including a stint down Castro street… Should’ve gone with truth, not dare.

syz's avatar

Oh, I’ll go with dare. How long do you suppose you would stay at a job that identifies your worth with your physical appearance, that puts you on exhibit as a sex object, and still keep any degree of self -esteem and self worth? How many times could you truly hear off color comments and lewd suggestions without your perception of humanity being skewed?

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there will ever be a shortage of attractive girls who are willing to take the easy way out and makes lots of money based on their sexuality. And it’s not exactly something that I fret over every day, or actively work against. But we have long lived in a society that objectifies and subjugates women. Why is it necessary that we pretend that Hooters isn’t simple titillation (no pun intended) disguised as “just another great place for wings”.

Wouldn’t you want your daughter to aspire to something better?

There’s no problem with it. It’s a gimmick just like many in businesses. There’s a restaurant in Japan with a toilet theme: you sit on a toilet and eat out of toilet shaped dishes. The women there are wearing decent clothing, and it’s not different than what women choose to wear during the Summer.

The only problem is gross men that think the women are there to screw them after they serve them food.

mazingerz88's avatar

Actually their dress code is just too conservative for my taste. I don’t think it deserves its name and is a half-baked sorry excuse for a business model targeting hooter fanboys and gals. They should just drop the name, be like Ruby Tuesday’s or TGIF’s.

King_Pariah's avatar

Self esteem? Self worth? Pretty much nonexistent here.

Michael_Huntington's avatar

@Blackberry Holy crap, that restaurant in Japan sounds shitty.

Here’s a lovely guy

Damn, I’m trying to find a video I once saw, of a Hooters manager who swore that he’d love for his daughter to work at a Hooters, until he did some street promos and heard what the men called the women who worked there.

Keep_on_running's avatar

@MacBatman31 But would you as a man mind if you saw your buddies for example, having their penis bulges being ogled at day and night, not to mention the lewd remarks, even if he willingly wanted to do it?

JilltheTooth's avatar

OK, @MacBatman31 , do you go to Hooters with your friends? Are all of you always extremely respectful of the servers? Do you hear comments from other tables about the servers? Now imagine that the server is your Mom, who is working there because the tips are good and she needs to support the two of you.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@syz that was on that show where the owners of big corporations pretend to be new workers to see “behind the scenes.” I can’t think of what it’s called, but I saw that.

MacBatman31's avatar

@Keep_on_running If I needed the money, I would do it. I have had crazy jobs for money that make me slightly uncomfortable.

@JilltheTooth I am actually extremely respectful, I was raised in the South and have nothing but the upmost respect for women. And the reason I don’t see a problem with Hooters, my grandmother, who instilled the respect I have for women, took me there when I was five years old. And where do you get off bringing my mother into this? My mom has done crazy stuff to support me. If she felt that Hooters was the only way to make the money for the family, then so be it.

marinelife's avatar

Well, how would you feel about a restaurant called ‘Nads that featured only men servers in provocative attire?

If you can picture yourself and how you would feel eating in a place like that, you can imagine what going to a place called “hooters” is like for women.

JilltheTooth's avatar

You misunderstood me, @MacBatman31 , my point was not that you would be disrespectful, but you asked what was wrong with Hooters. It promotes disrespectful behavior. And as far as your mom goes, my point was that because the tips are good there, mothers with young children often find that employment there is the difference between decently feeding their children and not. Have you never overheard the kinds of remarks that are made to and about the servers there? Would you want anyone’s mom being the brunt of that behavior? As someone who served drinks for awhile, not in a Hooters, I can tell you that the respectful men are badly outnumbered by the jerks. At Hooters it tends to be worse.
Personally, I like your Mom. That was my point in answer to your Q.

I’ve only been twice. Their food isn’t anything to write home about. The one time I went alone, the time there was spent observing older men blatantly flirting with the servers. Some of their actions were what I would expect to see at a strip club, if not worse.

mrrich724's avatar

I didn’t even know this mentality still existed. Jeez, I thought people were over it. The food’s good, their beer always taste fresh . . . and honestly, I’ve NEVER seen a Hooter waitress that was just THAT attractive anyway. . . so the only difference to me between hooters and any other bar/restaurant is that the girls don’t have to wear hideous, food stained pants, and saggy shirts.

There’s nothing offensive about what they wear, it’s the same shit women wear when they go to the gym to exercise . . . seriously.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

Because at the beach or the gym, you are also wearing beachwear or workout clothing but at Hooters, you aren’t. That’s the difference.

mrrich724's avatar

it’s a trivial difference. Like why women can wear two piece bikinis, but if they prance around in a bra and panties which are the same thing made of different material, they are construed as inappropriate.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@mrrich724 Yes, that’s true but, again, as long as you’re not wearing a speedo, it’s not okay.

jillian123's avatar

The difference is… you are not being paid to where a thong at the beach. At Hooters (aka: tits) they are being paid for flirting and dressing scantily. That is the difference. Money is being made. Trust me, the pimps (aka: restaruarnt managers) make a lot of money off these women (aka: girls) who sell a little part of their soul.
Why isn’t there a restaurant called “Weiners”. Men could wear speedos, there would be lots of wine, cooking shows on the tvs, etc.
