I downloaded a video and ever since popups keep coming up how do I make it stop?

Asked by nighttripper (162points) May 10th, 2008

I deleted the video and emptied the recycling bin. I did a “thorough” virus scan on my pc and deleted all the bad files it said it found. I got rid of all my internet temp files. They wont stop!

I left my computer on last night so I could listen to my music like I do every night and when I woke up there were 25 internet window popups open :S

dont they realize I’m not going to buy their product or take their “are you dumb?” test and that I am not a “super sexy horny single” seriously wtf?

Try clearing your cookies and rebooting. Do you have a pop up blocker?

i did clear the cookies and all the internet files and everything. i restarted the computer a few times both beore and after the virus scan. the pop up blocker is on block every pop up that attemts to pop up. but its not working every time i refresh a page or go to another site one comes up.

Maybe time for a new pop-up blocker? Unless you already have this one.

Did you run adaware or any other spyware program as well? This is all I can think of doing. Hopefully one of our resident experts will see this and have some better suggestions than mine.

You can get Adaware here I run it once a week to get rid of spyware and tracking cookies on my computer that slow me down. It might help you as well.

is that free?

Yes it is. they have version you pay for, but they have a free version also. It’s called Ad Aware 2007 free. Even if it doesn’t fix the current problem you are having, It’s a great program to have.

You could try to do a system restore which will bring you back to a date before whatever is doing this was loaded. I do that sometimes when it looks like all hope is gone for my computer, and it helps. I got to the programs section on my computer, then choose system tools, then system restore. It will ask you to choose a date to go back to I go back about a month. If you do this, you might have to reload ad aware because sometimes it takes off new programs added after the date you pick, but it hopefully will help you get rid of the pop ups as well.

system restore is impossible. i just got the pc back yesterday so there are no restore points available. thats what i was just trying to do and it said i cant do one

Also try SpyBot and AVG Free in addition to AdAware. Both are free and they should clean just about anything from your computer.
