How to get rid of Privacy Protection scan virus?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) November 27th, 2011

Just suddenly popped up on my Sony Vaio laptop running Vista. I turned my computer off then on again, but the scanning program was still there.

On the bottom right it keeps telling me different things will not start up in the executable files. My internet will NOT start. Is this really a virus or just a scare tactic to buy the scan software? It also tells me it detected a leak of my files through the internet.

A little help on how to completely delete this program will be appreciated.

It is fake. I would run Malware Bytes, see if that removes it. If not, let me know, I’ll look up some other instructions for you.

I have not tried Malware Bytes, but did try this TDSS Killer but it said no scan results found. It’s like this virus knows I’m trying to kill it and it won’t let me remove it. Is there a workaround for this?

Will re installing Windows get rid of it?

I don’t think TDSS Killer will do it, because I don’t think it’s a TDSS virus. Reinstalling Windows will get rid of it, but it’s really such a pain in the ass that it’s worth trying a few different virus scans first. Malware Bytes is good, as is Avast, Spyware Doctor, and AVS.

Ok thanks. I’ll try all of your suggestions first then get back to you.

It’s a virus. The only thing that worked for me was ComboFix.

Well, it seems after running Spyware Terminator and Trojan Remover, I am now free of the darn virus but how do I know it’s completely deleted and off my computer for good?

@AshlynM Wait a couple days to see if it pops up again. If it doesn’t pop up again, and MalwareBytes is saying it’s gone, it seems likely that it’s gone for good.

It’s probably gone. But here’s another how to and you might want to check if any of the associated files or registry entries are still there and remove or fix those if you feel comfortable doing that.
