How do professional athletes stay calm under such intense pressure to perform?

Asked by tekn0lust (1868points) May 30th, 2008

I only know one professional athlete and he’s a pro golfer. Golf and tennis have to be one of the most pressure packed sports for a single person because it’s just them no teammates.

So how are pro athletes able to repress all the emotion that we as fans thrive on?

lots of practice and filtering out all of the crap. but, not all pro athletes are able to repress their emotions…look at the NBA, NFL, MLB…they have their share of angry athletes.

but i believe they overcome some of the pressure by just being under that pressure all the time. the first time they hit a court or field, the emotions were probably more than they could handle. over time, a person gets used to it. it takes a special person to be an athlete…not everyone can deal with it, though, even with tons of practice.

it’s kindof like public speaking. the first time you do it, you want to hurl and you stutter and you sweat. after a few more times, the hurling sensation goes away and you’re more confident than before. pretty soon it’s just part of your life.

Most of today’s pro athletes started early in their youth, and have faced high pressure situations numerous times in their lifetime. But it us the ability to maintain their composure and perform consistently that makes them “professionals” beyond their athletic skills.
