What do you think about shows like Swamp People?

Asked by BBawlight (2437points) February 28th, 2013

You know those shows about rednecks and their lives and stuff? Like Swamp People and Lizard Lick Towing.
What do you think about them?
I, personally, don’t like them because of the way they depict us Southerners (in the U.S.). It’s like the people who run television think all people who live in the South are rednecks or hillbillies I’m not sure if those are the same thing.
What do you think about them?

It’s just more reality TV junk. Don’t watch it if you don’t like it. If nobody watched they’d stop airing it.

They put me in mind of the Wrong Turn movies, which is a little alarming to say the least.

I think they are garbage and part of the dumbing down of society in general. They set up the lowest type of idiotic, disgusting people as role models or at least encourage people to act like trash to get on TV. And let me make sure you understand I’m not referring to Southerners when I say that – especially since I am one – but ALL of the types of people they have on these shows, not just those who are supposed to be Southerners. Scuzzy business owners, sleazy barflies, horrible parents, etc. I will be so glad when that sort of show goes away. Half of them are so fake it’s ridiculous. Amish Mafia? Please. That horrible Abby Lee person who verbally abuses children? Honey Boo Boo’s mother who ought to have CPS called on her instead of being on TV. Gross.

I don’t watch any “reality” television.

I know nothing of these shows.

I do know rednecks. I don’t get along with many of them. In fact… I can’t think of any that I tolerate.

I do wish they’d get the damn mud-bogging trucks off the road and quit tearing up the asphalt. Some of us prefer our vehicles’ alignment to be true.

I like how it shows the reality of ‘gator hunting and that particular aspect of life in the bayou. I hope those guys get rich from the show. I think they are hardworking people who know what it means to be self-sufficient. I have a lot of respect for that type of life. Kudos to Swamp People.

I catch a few minutes of it now and again and I am like @bkcunningham. I think these people have really interesting and adventuresome lives, makes me a little envious. And I too hope they are getting paid well just like brad and angelina. I do think sometimes it seems as if the director or producers are trying to make them look stupid and I find that offensive. They are working hard, not living off the taxpayers and welfare, don’t seem to have any worse habits than ciggies and greasy cooking. If they constitute rednecks, I find them easier to live with than a lot of others. They remind me of my favorite croc man in the NT. He had an impressive array of letters after his name but they didn’t mean diddly to the crocs.

I should add, I can’t stand the reality shows where they put a bunch of young people in a house and film their every move, that is way too much information and none of it relevant to anything???

ccrow's avatar

I don’t watch any of those. I am so sick of ‘reality’ tv I could scream. They’re not ‘real’, they’re scripted… I occasionally watch Face Off because of interest in how they do the makeup effects; I really couldn’t care less about who wins. It isn’t surprising if they portray people based on stereotypes, because that’s what makes the most money.

O! This is one I saw when I was ghosting ya’ll at work. They are SO stupid I can’t help but watch for a couple of minutes. But no longer than that.

Regular US southerners would make boring TV. Just like regular everyday people from the north , and west and east. Who here believe their lives would be adventurous or interesting enough to expect America to watch them? Not this guy. Compared to everything else TV has to offer, how much worse are the Swamp People?

augustlan's avatar

Hate shows like that. All of them.

woodcutter's avatar

everyone should only watch OWN

woodcutter's avatar

Its my only hope of getting a new car.

Dutchess_III's avatar

One show that I can’t believe any one would seriously watch is “Looking for Big Foot.” They NEVER find a big foot, and they never will. They don’t exisit! If they did, we would have found a skeleton, something by now.

woodcutter's avatar

Those paranormal shows. We really need entertainment bad apparantly.

Bigfoot eat their own, bones and all.
its a well known fact

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL!!

I was thinking of those paranormal shows too. THEY never find anything either. How long are people willing to watch shows where they never find anything and nothing happens?

diavolobella's avatar

Oh man, and Ancient Aliens. Yeah, everything on Earth that came from an ancient civilization was apparently created by aliens, not humans. Or maybe by Freemasons, because apparently they had a hand in everrrrryyythingggg. Maybe the Freemasons WERE aliens? Or Bigfoots? Or Chupacabras.

I really wish the History Channel would show HISTORY and not fiction. At least we can hopefully be spared any further Mayan calendar programs.

Dutchess_III's avatar

We still have Nova and Nature on PBS, @diavolobella.

diavolobella's avatar

True, but Nova is more science and Nature is, well, nature. I’m into history.

Seek's avatar

I liked Discovery Civilization… but that’s gone away, too. Now it is “Investigation Discovery” with so called “true crime” shows (typically “Bitches be crazy, killin’ they men!”)

Anyone remember when TLC was “The Learning Channel”, instead of the Honey Boo-boo channel?

Does everything have to deteriorate to vapid annoyingness?

Dutchess_III's avatar

They have some cool History stuff on Nova, like how the pyramids were built.
I like history too. Ancient history.
