Is it possible to do the splits after puberty?

Asked by Isssyyy (66points) March 13th, 2013 from iPhone

I heard somewhere that if you weren’t able to do the splits before you reached puberty you won’t be able to do it.

Is this true because I really want to learn how to do the splits

I haven’t heard anything like that before. Managed to do splits before I hit puberty, but got lazy and inflexible, so I haven’t been able to go down as low. Personally, I believe it’s more of a commitment to consistently stretch and push yourself to split wider everyday. (: trying once every week probably wouldn’t work as well.
All the best with your splits! ;D

I tried doing the splits & my nuts wound up as epaulettes on my shirt…& i’m not even in the military/emergency services/security business.

Of course it is possible. It just takes a lot of proper stretching exercises and practice.

I could do a split until I was 30, which is way past puberty.

Just tried one. Worked just fine. I can’t remember puberty.

Age 30 here, can still do it. I first managed to do it age 17 or so after about 3 years of martial arts training, I was well past puberty.

Be careful, it is possible to over stretch and develop hyper flexibility, meaning your bones can pop out of their sockets and become dislocated easier. Don’t over do it.

Age 40, I can still do it, just hurts a little more.

Nope it isn’t true. I couldn’t do the splits until I was almost 30. With stretching I was able to do front splits on both sides and was super close to side splits.

SuperMouse How did you learn how to do them? What sort of exercises did you do?

It depends partly on your anatomy and how flexible you are. I know women who learned to do them much later than their teen years. I wasn’t one of them, but I had (have) a very straight back. Some dancers had trouble holding themselves straight.
