What are some useful phrases(or Icebreakers, conversation starters) to be used on a Boat heading to London?

Asked by Gifted_With_Languages (1143points) June 14th, 2013

Answer seriously.

What can I say to engage in a conversation while speaking with the people who will be with me on the Boat?

Thank you so much.

I can talk about the weather, for starters. Right?

Icebreakers would be very appropriate if you are on the Titanic.

Otherwise, yes the weather is a good topic. You could also ask whether they are going to London to visit people, on business or as tourists. Is it their first visit to London? What are they hoping to see?

I’m getting the feeling from your questions that you have a lot of social anxiety associated with this trip rather than a language limitation.

“Hey, did you hear they were thinking of changing the name ‘Big Ben’ to ‘Queen Elizabeth Tower’, or something ?”

“Bollocks !!”

Ask people about themselves.

So why are you traveling to England (or London)?

That’s a beautiful coat (or dress or hat or necklace). Where did you get it?

Smooth ocean so far, isn’t it?

Hi, my name is X, and I am traveling to London for Y. How about you?

@ragingloli I think the OP is French so we saved her.

@janbb: No, the Soviets saved us all by bleeding the Wehrmacht dry on the Eastern Front…

@bookish1 Well, true if you want to get all historically accurate about it. :-)

I don’t know how other cultures might respond, but I’ve always started with noticing an item a person is carrying or wearing and going from there. Women love to be complimented on a piece of jewelry or a pretty item of clothing; men enjoy telling you where they got their new briefcase or suit.

Is there anything in particular you plan to do in London?
Have you taken any other cruises?
Have you heard of any particularly good restaurants in the city.
Do you have any side trips planned, like to Stratford?

I suggest you watch some videos of SimplePickup on Youtube. I know they are not exactly intended for meeting up with people casually as ‘friends’, but there are some things in those that can be applied to any occasion.

I also think a good icebreaker is being completely honest and asking things that you normally don’t. Once, I was asked by someone I met to tell me something I never told anyone before(not in a creepy way). He was very warm, energetic and cool, I left my guard and we became very close in no time.

Didn’t you already ask this a week or two ago?

I like to open with, “How much did you pay for that _____, and how much do you weigh?”

I often wonder why nobody likes me.
