What, in your opinion, is a great B-side (of a 7 inch vinyl record)?

Asked by rebbel (35549points) July 12th, 2013

I was watching a documentary on 7 inch records this evening, and “the b-sides” were also discussed in it.
That made me think what, from my small collection of singles, was the best b-side that I have.
The b-side of The Cult’s Love Removal Machine must be it: Wolf Child’s Blues it’s called.
What, for you, is the best/a great “other side” of a single that you have/had?

The Beatles:

“I Saw Her Standing There” was the B-side of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”

“If I Fell” was the B-side of “And I Love Her”

“Strawberry Fields Forever” was the B-side of “Penny Lane”

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was the B-side of “Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da” (that most exquisite George Harrison song shouldn’t have had second billing to anything)

This is one of those painful questions that makes you wish you had better musical experiences as a youth… lots of recognizable B-sides I wish I could claim were in my house, but these are a couple that I did have that I can think of off the top of my head. And yeah, I think I played the B-sides as often as the singles. :)

I could have sworn we had a Police single or two kicking around, but I don’t recognize any of the tracks listed online as B-sides. We had piles of them, but they would tend to be played either (a) over and over and over when the single came out, or (b) a rainy afternoon of B-sides, just going through the stacks and mostly saying, “wow, this is really weird and/or terrible and/or cool, let’s play that again”.

Foxy Lady by Jimi Hendrix, which is the B-side of “Somewhere”.

The Wind Cries Mary, which is the b-side of “Purple Haze”.

I’ll Be Around by the Spinners, which is the b-side of “How Could I Let You Get Away”.

Unchained Melody by Bobby Hatfield: b-side to “Hung On You”.

Roadhouse Blues by the Doors: beside “You Make Me Real”.

Queen We Will Rock You was the B side of We Are the Champions.

Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs.

Jelly friends – Does anyone still have 45 rpm’s in those little, square boxes with carrying handles on top? I do!

One of my favourite songs – God Only Knows by the Beach Boys was the B-side to Wouldn’t it be nice which now always makes me think of Cadbury chocolate. The power of advertising.

Ruby Tuesday was the B-Side to Let’s spend the night together (with a glimpse of Jimmy Savile at the start – ick).

For the Fluther poms….The Magic Roundabout as the B Side to Funky Moped.

Carrot’s cheeky version of The Magic Roundabout was a spoof based on the original BBC children’s programme. It shows the power of banning a record. The B side was banned by the BBC and so Funky Moped reached the top five of the music charts.

Another Lonely Christmas was the B-Side to I Would Die 4 U, from Purple Rain by Prince.

Amazing songs – both of them.

The Beatle’s Revolution was a B side of Hey Jude.

Steam’s Na Na Hey Hey Tell Him Goodbye was an attempt to make a crappy B side for their A side cut. Oops.
