Why do so very many shows, mostly watched by men, have shirtless men on them?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) October 2nd, 2013

It just dawned on me, while chit chatting with a female friend, that we watch completely different shows. We just have different tastes. Fine.

But if I turn on Arrow, or Community, or Person of Interest, I am going to see a man shirtless.

If I turn on one of her crime shows, I am absolutely gonna see women in bras and panties, sometimes in garters, and men in suits.

What the hell is going on?

They may just be giving the opposite sex a reason not to insist on the channel being changed.

Because the show’s producers think that women are so empty-headed that they will watch a show just because they display a man’s chest.

It works for men (watching naked women), so I imagine that they think that the opposite will be true.

You do have something in common with her. You’re both gay.

I think there’s a lot more crossover with audiences than people realize. For example, I had no clue that Community was watched mostly by men. Most of the people I know who watch it are nerdy women. A lot of us watch Game of Thrones, which is definitely aimed at men and has a ton of boobs. Maybe the writers are just out of touch with the audience.

Women have always enjoyed watching shows with beautiful women in them, partly to see how they might wish to look. Perhaps it’s the same with men. Both sexes enjoy sculptures of both sexes, why not photos? Or perhaps the writers, producers and directors mean to attract viewers who are gay. That’s okay too. Watch whatever you enjoy for whatever reason. It’s a much more free world these days.

The action attracts men. The shirtless men are meant to attract women. Do guys care about Vin Diesel’s ripped body in Fast and Furious? No, but women might. (Not sure why, though. He’s odd looking.) People making the film want as many people as possible to watch it, so they seek to attract both sexes.
