My restaurant is tanking on Sunday, when's the earliest I can file for California Unemployment?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) January 2nd, 2014

This is the 2nd time in 4 years a place I’ve worked at is tanking and closing down. Corporate gave this information to my GM and one of the managers told me Sunday is our last day. Only 4 of the 30 people who work there know about this.

So yes back to my OP when can I file? I will be going to school, while searching for a job. I’m really ticked that we didn’t even get a months notice so I could adequately look for another job.

If California unemployment works like it does in Maryland you should be able to file online immediately.

In the states where I have worked, New York and North Carolina, you can apply for unemployment immediately after termination. However, there is a one week waiting period where you do not collect a payment.

AS per EDD (Employment Development Department) section of the California Department of Labor web site, your claim should be filed in the first week that you have become totally or partially unemployed. It is important to file right away because your first week is an unpaid waiting week, commonly referred to as the waiting period.
California unemployment claims can be filed online. You may also file a claim by calling the Telephone Claims Center at 1–866-333–4606.
