If a novice smokes too much weed and can't stand up and is dizzy is this "fun?"?

Asked by Aster (20023points) January 28th, 2014

What if an adult who had never touched weed smoked an entire joint very fast, the room began spinning and he could not get out of bed for twelve hours. Is this considered “fun” and being high? Or is it something to be avoided that no smoker seeks out or finds to be fun?

He smoked too much of a strong strain. You live, you learn. It’s probably not fun, but it’s entirely his fault.

Ask them. Does not sound like fun to me.

Well, the diizzyness and “unable to stand up” sounds simple hyperventilating to me. The “staying in bed for 12 hours” sounds like something unrelated to regular weed. Was it laced with something?
As far as “fun,” I guess that would depend on that person’s perspective. Some people find odd things (to me) to be fun.

No one else gets to say what a person considers fun. 24 hours later they may say, “never again”, or they may say, “do you have any more of that weed?”. Or any where in between.

@Dutchess_III: Really? Because when I was 17 I tried three bong hits and slept for 6 afterward. lol

It might be to a person that has nothing better to do with their day than lie in bed. “Fun” is subjective. I’d rather not be completely useless for 12 hours. And there’s nothing fun about being dizzy if you ask me.

See, this is why I never bothered trying weed. Why would I want to be sleepy in the middle of the day? I have things to do. If I were to try any drug, which I haven’t and have no plans to, it wouldn’t be a downer. Weed, Xanax, etc. – why? Bring on the Adderall so I can bounce off the walls and get some shit done today! Just kidding.

@livelaughlove21: Xanax makes you feel so good you don’t care if you’re sleepy.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@poofandmook I’ve taken Xanax before – not to feel “good,” but because I had anxiety as a teen. All it did was knock me out. That’s it. If I felt good, I slept through it. It also made me groggy the next morning and concentrating in class was hard. I stopped taking it, needless to say. I’m sure if I didn’t need it and was taking it recreationally, it would have a different effect.

I had a cousin (I say “had” because she died recently from a lethal drug combination involving Xanax) that was dependent on it and she was always falling asleep sitting up and making a complete fool out of herself, slurring her words and talking nonsense. She was so high she didn’t care, of course, but I’d prefer not to take a drug that makes me look like a complete idiot. I may not care when I’m high, but I’m sure I’ll care afterward.

You know what makes me feel good? Being a productive member of society, being able to carry on a conversation with another human being, and coming off as someone that’s not a few bulbs short of a tanning bed. Not sitting on my couch nodding out and giggling at my plants. I’ll pass.

@livelaughlove21: For the record… I have a legit script for Xanax because I have panic/general anxiety disorder. I go through about 2 refills of 30 a year… my last statement made me sound like an addict >.<

Interesting that it just knocked you out. I guess it’s just your tolerance. Mine makes me feel really good. Sure, I will fall asleep if I’m sitting around at home, but I can function on it if I’m not in a place where I can sleep.

Dutchess_III's avatar

6 hours is only half of 12 hours @poofandmook. I’ve never fallen asleep for hours at a stretch after smoking weed, unless I smoked an hour before bed time at night.

I kind of wish we had more details.

livelaughlove21's avatar

You’re probably right about my tolerance, @poofandmook. I don’t take drugs like that unless I absolutely have to. I recently decided to not start on Zoloft for my anxiety because I didn’t want to be a zombie all day.

My husband is worse than I am. He hardly ever takes pain meds stronger than ibuprofen, but once he took a prescribed low-dose Vicodin for some bad back pain he was having and, about 30 minutes later, he told me he felt like he was going to float off the couch. Lightweight!

We’re just a couple of squares, I guess. :)

Fun to me? No, I’d rather do something creative but, to each their own. Sounds like he experienced a whitey though.

Could not or did not want to get out of bed? Two different things.

Actually I had never heard of that happening, even with the best grades of weed. Weed takes some time to hit you usually, and some strains take longer than others (like a creeper type of weed). It’s very possible to smoke too much too fast, but you’ll likely just be annihilated (la la land) or in a couch-lock type state rather than getting dizzy or sick once it catches up to you. You can hyperventilate from smoking anything too fast, or doing anything that cuts oxygen from the brain.

The degree of the effects can be factored in by whether you are smoking more of an indica or sativia strain too. Unlike in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s most strains of weed today are hybrids.

The effects you had described above I had experienced, but this was from drinking too much alcohol. Sometimes using snuff or smoking a cigarette for the first time will do this to you as well. I notice that people who don’t use weed, or had used it very little tend to stereotype the drug and those who use it.

livelaughlove21's avatar

You know, everyone I’ve spoken to about this has said that weed had no effect on them the first time. They didn’t experience any type of high until they tried it again.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@livelaughlove21 I think the people you’ve spoken to more than likely didn’t know how to inhale properly.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@uberbatman All of them? I doubt it. Many were smokers before they tried it.

poofandmook's avatar

Everyone told me I wouldn’t get high the first time. We were using a bong and I didn’t know how much to suck up into the chamber, so they told me when to stop and take the hit. The third time around, they forgot, and I ended up taking a massive hit. The high hit me like a ton of bricks… along with coughing up a lung, eyes burning fire and gushing tears…

@livelaughlove21 the way one inhales tobacco vs marijuana are pretty different imo. Tobacco is generally a smaller quick inhale/exhale. Marijuana is a larger inhale to fill your lungs and then holding it there for a bit before exhaling. If you smoke a joint like a cigarette you will more than likely not get high.

livelaughlove21's avatar

@uberbatman I thought you meant that they probably weren’t inhaling. My mistake. However, this comment by @poofandmook makes me think that I’m not the only one who’s heard that many people don’t get high their first time:

“Everyone told me I wouldn’t get high the first time.”

If you’re smoking with someone that does it often, they’re most likely going to tell you to inhale and hold it. I don’t think many people smoke alone the first time. According to marijuana.com (oy), it’s common to not get high the first time or first few times, even when inhaling properly. One person on the message board said, “we’re asked this question once a week.”

But I don’t know. I don’t smoke, never have smoked, never will smoke. Legal or illegal, it doesn’t matter to me. The stuff reeks and, after growing up in a household where everyone smoked weed, I’ve never seen the point. I can sit on the couch and scarf down a bag of Doritos while laughing at stupid shit without the use of a substance. And if I want to relax, I’ll do some yoga.
