Do you know anyone with Diabetic Nerve damage who not only stopped its advance but whose nerves then repaired themselves and normalized?

Asked by Dan_Lyons (5527points) June 26th, 2014

I have the nerve damage. Discovered it last year and went to the doc for treatment. She prescribed the Metformin and was hopeful we could stop the advance of the nerve damage but wasn’t so hopeful regarding the repair of the nerves.
So I changed my diet, exercised and took the pills.

Bazinga! The nerve damage ceased its relentless advancing which would have possibly meant goodby feet and some of my legs.
And little by little over the past year I have noticed my nerves have been repairing themselves and have almost reached normalcy.
I’m wondering if anyone has heard of this happen to others.

I was hoping someone would have an answer, as my father has nuerophathy caused by having a vein removed from his leg to do a heart bypass. He’s gone to the pain clinic and tried just about everything, everything that would keep him conscious at least, and nothing has worked for him.

So I just looked up your medication, Metformin, and I’m surprised that it has helped you, because so far everything I’ve read about that drug suggests that it can cause permanent nerve damage. Yikes!

Not with diabetes, and not with pharmaceutical drugs, but I believe it, and I’ve seen all sorts of stuff like this happen. Yaay for you!

@Dan_Lyons Wait! Are you saying diet, exercise and prescribed medicine actually works?

In my prostate cancer group there are several guys who had nerve bundles removed. during surgery leaving them impotent, and / or incontinent. After about a year of exercise and therapy some of them noticed activity and reconnection of nerve endings. Some who “lost it all” have it back!

Diet and exercise works a heck of a lot better than sitting on the couch, eating cookies and candy. If someone is out on disability it should be their job to work at getting healthy again.

Congratulations on your success!

How much weight have you lost?

Thanks @LuckyGuy Lemme see, I was 204, dropped down to 175 over the 1st 6 months and then put on 10. Weight now 185. (I have to cut down on the baked potatoes)!

There you go!!! You are saving your life! Great!
Baked potato?! Are you freaking kidding me?! They are not called Carb Bombs for nothing. If you can’t give ‘em up, try only eating half or a third.

Seriously. You are likely going to live many more years. Would you rather live with both feet and a working d***, or eat 500 baked potatoes? I know which one I’d pick.
You are really lucky! You figured it out while the damage was still reversible. Yay!

Hey, while we’re talking, come with me to the grocery store. See that fat lady over there driving the Rascal along the cookie aisle? She tells everyone who will listen, her problem is “genetic sugarbetes”. Now take a look in her cart. Go ahead, I’ll wait. ... What did you see?
Yep.
She’s just buying those generic lemon cookies for the grand kids. She won’t eat even one She got that big by smelling them. Just ask her. She’ll tell you.

Good for you! THAT is good news for the day!
I wish I could give you 10 lurve for every pound you lose!

I probably shouldn’t have been eating those lemon cookies myself, but I found this sugar free stuff and I had to try. Sugar free ice cream too! Wahoo.
But I got that out of my system and as soon as I polish off the sugar free jelly and peanut butter I will denounce all the sugar free products too.
As for the potatoes, it might have been all the butter and sour cream I was adding. I have since quit the potatoes and butter and sour cream. * sigh *

It’s not easy being a sugar junkie.

Would you rather live with both feet and a working d***

This was the exact question I asked myself just before putting my foot down, as it were, and deciding to spend the rest of my life sugar free.

I refuse to let my poor eating habits kill me. And actually that wouldn’t be so bad, but the insidious nature of diabetes is that it steals body parts and organs making life intolerably miserable way before it kills you.
I should probably get work somewhere as a diabetics counselor.

You wrote “I refuse to let my poor eating habits kill me. ” EXACTLY!!!
I wish others would figure that out !!!

Oh look! The fat lady driving the Rascal just left. Let’s see where she goes… Yep. As expected – right to the closest Handicapped spot. And look! The Helping Hands team is even loading all her groceries into her trunk. The 2 liter bottles of generic coke are being put on the floor behind the passenger seat.

@fluthernutter I was going to comment on the poor choice of avatar for this thread and then I looked more closely. Fantastic.
