Why don't butterflies try to get indoors?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) June 24th, 2015

This time of year it seems like every bug out there is laying in wait for an opportunity to get in the house. Guess the cool, quiet dryness is hard to resist.

However, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a butterfly in the house. Why do you suppose that is?

They move to slow to get in the door. Good question.

They need sunlight to fly.

The flies won’t let them?

@dappled_leaves Truth. Most butterflies are also only interested in liquids from flowers or fruit, unlike a lot of other things like flies or ants which eat, or lay eggs in/on varied sources.
Moths could get in your house though, especially the nocturnal ones. (which most are) Usually by mistake, when attracted by light sources, but some moths hibernate and may be looking for shelter.

Because Butterflies are nectar feeders and there are no flowers indoors. They are not attracted to light like moths and they are not attracted to food and sweat and shit like flies. lol
I just gave the horses a bath here and a fly spray, man, I had about 80 flies swarming me until I brought out the sprayer. Fucking flies suck! lol

Not all of them, @talljasperman. Thanks

That’s very cool, @dappled_leaves. Care to source?

But, I’ve had bees and wasps enter the house, @Symbeline & @Coloma.

@dappled_leaves was close to right. Apparently adult butterflies only like to eat when the sun is out. So you will only see them in sunny spots. They also like to bask in the sun. That explains why they seem to love large fields with flowers.
So I guess our homes are too dark to attract them.
I did have a butterfly fly in my home once but there was a bird close by. So I think it shot in to get away.
Heres a site that answers all your questions about butterflies.
Good question though. I would wonder once in a while why they seem to avoid shelter areas. Now I know.

They will congregate on my patio door (the smaller brown butterflies) like they might want in, but fly away when I open.
Must just be for the morning sun.

Look at the way the demented buggers fly. It’s like they take off, drunk & the entire flight is spent in abject fear, desperately lunging for somewhere to land safely.
Them fuckers don’t have time for flying into peeps houses.

@ibstubro Wasps are scavengers. But yeah, weird about the bees. I’ve rarely seen bees inside big cities though. Well, there must be some.

bee some. lol?
