Anyone here get tonsil stones?

Asked by tan253 (2958points) October 4th, 2016

Hi All,
Anyone here get tonsil stones. I’ve got what I think is one but I’m worried it might be throat cancer. I can’t scrape it away at all. It looks like it’s under the skin? Can that happen?
If I push it, it dissapears but then comes back up? Now I’m seeing another one under the skin as well – not sure that is how they grow?

It smells like a gross tonsil stone but then I’ve heard that tonsil cancer smells too. I’ve been to two doctors and they both say it doesn’t look like cancer but could be an inclusion cyst, however, it’s not round or protruding out of my tonsil. For all intensive purposes it looks like a tonsil stone and smells like one but I can’t actually get at it, it’s like it’s under a thin layer of tissue – can this happen?

My daughter gets them and wants to have her tonsils, voluntarily removed. She is 28. She has had the problem for a few years, I don’t remember her having any issues as a child. I still have my tonsils and have no problems.
Some people are just more prone to them. I seriously doubt you have cancer, you are young and that is an uncommon cancer anyway. Ask your doctor what to do, or see and era, nose and throat doctor.

I’m not that young, I’m 40! Anyone of any age can get tonsil cancer, and I’m thinking that all the crypts etc… body have to heal itself all the time. I’m so paranoid. I“m heading to ENT – the Dr told me I don’t need to see one but I’m going private anyway as I can’t cope- it’s like having a splinter that I just want removed, that plus the fact that I“m poking and prodding it so much it’s bleeding and that’s not good – I just want it out!

I have had them twice, the first time in mid-2014 and the second time in September 2016. Keep gargling with warm salt water or hydrogen peroxide diluted with water every day. They will dislodge eventually!

I get them all the time. I just dig them out with my tongue. No biggie.

Thanks guys, I’m just wondering if anyone has had them hidden under tonsil skin? So you can’t actually attack them….?? I can definitely feel them in there – and it’s really frustrating, just not sure if they are indeed tonsil stones as I’m use to be able to dislodge them!

Sometimes I’ll get one that’s pretty deep in there. It takes some work but they pop out eventually.

Thanks @Seek – chances are it’s just a deep tonsil stone – waiting to erupt from the tonsil – it has been almost 3 weeks though!

I used to get them regularly, like once a month. Change in diet plus an alkaline mouthwash a few months back and I haven’t had once since.

Did you get any under the skin that took a while to come through?

Winter_Pariah's avatar

Yes, when they did come out, there was a little blood too.

No ! And I didn’t get my tonsils removed but my Doctor asked when I had them removed, but I have not had them removed.

“Nice scars”, my Doctor said. I must be lucky.

oh dear, I poked my one and it bled, hopefully that’s not too dangerous, I did gargel with betadine antiseptic rinse afterwards!

I’d never heard of this before. Sounds annoying. I found this from Uncle Google. http://tonsilstonesadvisor.com/

I thought I’d update everyone – I finally got it out this morning, not just one but five came out!!!

There are still more in there, but if anyone is searching if tonsil stones can hide under skin then YES they CAN!
I had it for a month before it came out!

Thanks goodness it came out!
I was thinking it was something worse.

Glad to hear you got some out, good luck in getting the rest out.

I could have gone my whole life blissfully unaware of this. What has been seen on youtube cannot be unseen and after all attempts to locate any of these nasty nuggets I have been fortunate enough to be clear of their presence. I even used one of those lighted removal tools and angled syringe. I still don’t understand how some people can reach back there with their tongue. Just using a q-tip makes me gag something awful. I’m still utterly horrified by this phenomena.
@tan253 If you had them hiding how did you know they were there?

I have an oddly long and dextrous tongue. Think Gene Simmons.

It was useful for grossing out my friends in grade school. “Eeewww, Alyson can pick her nose with her tongue!!

That moment when you out-icky the boys. Haha.
