What are your thoughts on dressing for comfort vs fashion?

Asked by XiaoMandyX (165points) September 6th, 2018

This will sound so immature so please bear with me, but there is a super hot girl in my class and I’m honestly a jealous of the attention she gets. Not aimed at her, she is lovely, but just wish I got more attention. I’ve asked guys what makes her attractive, and they all said her style.

We both look similar but she wore a grey turtleneck sweater, black leather pants, and boots today. I wore t-shirt and shorts, pretty much like everyone else.

Did I mention it was almost 90F and humid? Everyone was absolutely dying of heat and she looked perfectly comfortable the whole day!

Honestly, the outfit looked great on her, and I know something similar would look great on me. Should I do it? Sacrifice comfort for fashion?

There is a happy medium where one dresses for comfort yet stylish. Despite the heat today, you could have worn a short skirt, and heels, with maybe a light silk blouse, and been stylish yet comfy.

She may have looked cool, but I bet she was sticking to the leather pants.
@zenvelo has it right. I remember being at a bowling alley in the winter, snow blowing, cold as heck and this girl comes in with a sun dress on. It was a pretty dress, but it looked very out of place in the winter.

@XiaoMandyX Comfort wins it for me hands down! Seasoned citizen here so not competing for anything/anyone. Love pretty colors and coordinating comfortable outfits.

Style is only partly about clothes.
It also includes self confidence, knowing when to show humor, and not come off like a giggling ninny. Being able to face a group and not inch back to the periphery.
You don’t have to be a sponge for attention to show style, but how you present yourself is what gives you power.

One can have both with the right clothes for you.
Perhaps another reason why she is garnering attention is that she dresses the opposite of everyone else and therefore stands out of the crowd.
Much like a blond haired girl would grab attention around a lot of dark haired girls.
Something as simple as that.
If boys are usually girl watching and everyone looks similar only the one that stands out will grab there attention faster than the rest would.
Non conformists will draw attention sometimes not welcome attentions either.

I dress for comfort at home and fashionable outside.

Being comfortable in your own skin is also important. Dressing differently, or more stylish than the norm, might garner you attention but if you are not comfortable and confident in yourself it will not come off the way you want.

On a personal note, I usually go the comfort route. I have clothes that fall in both categories but only wear the more stylish on special occasions. Most days find me in tee shirt and shorts. The concessions I make are a pocket tee but I need a place to put my reading glasses and mostly cargo shorts because I seem to have an inordinate amount of “stuff” that I end up carrying around and the large front pockets make ideal smartphone carriers. I have broken too many screens carrying it in my back pocket
