What are some good parks, mountains, etc for camping near New York City?

Asked by Skeeter (14points) September 1st, 2008

We’re looking to squeeze in a couple camping weekends before the weather gets too cold. Does anyone have suggestions for places within a few hours drive that are good for car and/or easy hike-in camping?

The Catskills are only 117 miles away from NYC.

There are many nice places to stay there. Ever visited that area?

Thanks, JackAdams. I’ve never been up to the Catskills. Can you recommend some specific places to try up there?

And The Shawangunk area – my kids used to rock climb and camp there. Near New Paltz.

Skeeter, all of them are indeed very good, and I can’t really recommend any at this time (specifically) because I haven’t been up there, since the 1960s, when I lived in Flushing (Queens).

Ah! New Paltz! Home of the Hugenots, and 84 miles away from NYC.

The resting place of boxing legend FLOYD PATTERSON, a true gentleman and role model for kids, everywhere.

The Poconos are another great spot to visit, and are only 81 miles away from NYC.

They are more of a Honeymooners place, however, but welcome everyone, equally.

And still in the “strike zone,” should NYC get nuked by terrorists.
