Why do so many people wear their masks incorrectly?

Asked by Kraigmo (9055points) May 9th, 2020

I see this in person every day: https://i.redd.it/hbs72yq5z7r41.png

I realize most people are wearing their masks correctly, but a huge number of people are not.
If possible, I’d really like to hear from someone who wears their mask the way you see in the picture here, and ask them: “What the hell are you thinking?”

What the hell are they thinking?

I don’t know. It’s stupid if you are out in public around people.

At work, I sometimes do that or take my mask off for a bit (Not around others) because working in a hot ass kitchen with a mask makes me feel dizzy if I don’t get some fresh air.

Many of your questions have a common theme

You seem to asking for acknowledgement that people are pretty stupid (and maybe also that you are the exception)

Well, perhaps they are stupid.

So now that that’s out the way, what are you going to do about it?

I just wanted to say this has been driving me crazy, too. I really want to know why people wear them that way, and I keep imagining myself finally asking someone I see wearing it this way, but I can’t figure out a way that won’t come off as rude. I’ve also seen several other ways people wear them in ways that seem to defeat the purpose, and it makes me wonder.

The best I can come up with is that health officials should probably have spent longer across the country explaining how to wear masks so they do what you want them to do, because it apparently isn’t common knowledge?

The guy in front of me at the grocery store had his hanging down off of one ear. Useless to even have a mask.

A lot of masks that don’t have a respirator valve, will accumulate CO2 and heat.
I guess some people do as your link illustrates, for temporary relief from that.

@Brian1946 will they really? Are the masks really that close to being airtight that they can trap air molecules? I’ve never heard that as an issue before.

The place I live in, people bought masks, the same ones I use, they are the local masks, you can only get those, or pay more to get them abroad, but either way, a man was wearing that mask constantly, correctly, and suffered from CO2 Asphyxation, fainting and doctors had to rush him to the hospital. The masks we are told to wear are garbage and useless, they don’t even trap viruses correctly. There have been areas where I live, where people got sick even after following all they were told.

When no one’s around, I’ll pull my mask out just to let some fresh air in. Mask breath – it’s a thing.
