Is it possible to exhale and inhale at the same time?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) July 23rd, 2020

I am watching a man on tv do a series of fast pushups.
He says to breathe that way while doing them and that those who play wind instruments do this.
How is that done?

You puff out your cheeks and then let the air slowly escape from your mouth while inhaling through your nose.

I do something very similar on my longer runs. Take a big gulp of air in, hold it as long as possible, then very gently exhale but only a little.
Inhale a big breath again & repeat the whole thing up to 3 times.

It works too, the long run is made so much more easy & comfortable.

@Lightlyseared -I am trying this right now and only passed out twice!XD
@JeSuisRickSpringfield -Thank you for the link!
@ucme What happens if you go to four times?

@lucillelucillelucille I would either pass out or speak with a squeak.
Three is neat & tidy, always do things in 3’s…free tip.

Do they just call that a “hale”?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Demosthenes -I call it impossible! I can’t do it.
Can you?

I played the trumpet from 4th grade through 4 years of college and never breathed like that.
