Isn’t it peculiar what can run through your head just as you’re falling asleep?

How often has it been startling enough to wake you up?

Yes, the weirdest thoughts come up. I don’t really get scary thoughts at night, but I do regularly startle myself with silly organizational stuff. Then I feel the urge to respond to emails or buy new sheets at 3 am. Somehow, that’s vitally important right then.

I’ve noticed myself starting to dream before I fall asleep, sometimes, which can be pretty interesting. It hasn’t seemed more peculiar than what come in dreams, but I didn’t expect that it would come before becoming unconscious, until it happened. Noticing that can cause me to wake up.

I think the first time I remember something like that was when I was a little kid, and found myself actually trying to catch myself from falling, but I was only dreaming I was falling.

@Zaku YES the falling thing is the perfect example.

My thoughts right before I fall asleep can be quite disjointed and surreal. I imagine it must be similar to what it’s like to “trip” on a psychoactive drug. I wouldn’t say anything running through my head during that time has startled me awake, but sometimes the thoughts become so irrational that I stop and think “wait a minute, that doesn’t even make sense”.

I usually nod right off. But sometimes when I wake up, it’s earlier or later than I imagined. Or I’ll jolt awake, look at the clock, freak out that I should be at work, then realize, “Oh yeah, Im off today”.
