Being able to hold an upright posture, head and all, while dozing, is a pretty good skill. Notice the braced position. He’s had practice.

I’ve seen a whole row of Japanese top execs at a Japanese company do this during a celebratory event. Impressive. Zen practitioners do it too sometimes, falling asleep solidly upright during hours of meditation. The story is that ancient Zen master Bodhidharma cut off his eyelids to keep from falling asleep during zazen. That’s why he typically looks so fierce in paintings and sculptures.

I’ll bet Joe wasn’t the only person nodding off during speeches. Where are all the other pictures?
