In fallout 3, can you use the "Here and Now" perk at level 20?

Asked by fortris (683points) November 18th, 2008

Meaning when you reach level 20, can use choose it as your perk? Or is 19 the last level you can use it? Do you think it’s even worth it?

Oh, wow. Good question. I used it as soon as it was available. I wish I hadn’t! I had no idea there was a level cap of 20. :( Waste of a perk.

I’d assume that it becomes unavailable at 19, but I can’t verify. I’ll bet someone has asked this on the gamefaqs board.

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

From the little bit of digging I’ve done, no, you cannot use Here and Now at level 20. It seems like a waste of a perk to me anyway.

fortris's avatar

And how do you find the Mechanist? I can’t get into his elevator

fortris's avatar

Thats exactly what I thought, stupid level cap :(

bodyhead's avatar

It’s not even worth it. If you find all of the bobbleheads, you should have everything you use (skillwise) maxed out at 100 skill as long as you also took comprehension and found all the books. (They say it’s possible to max everything playing the game legit but I haven’t made it past level 8 myself).

It’s good to see fellow capital wasteland dwellers on here.

tonedef's avatar

@bodyhead: so far, I have… one bobblehead. :( I allocated my SPECIAL and skills really stupidly. I hope I can beat the game. Might have to put it on easy and blow up some heads. CHOO CHOO!

sacaver's avatar

Yeah. I wasted a perk on it myself. Wish I had not. Oh well…

has anyone noticed what the dude farming outside the clinic in Megaton does? Go watch…

bodyhead's avatar

Hey tonedef experience is tied to difficulty. You’ll get less experience from killing on easy. (just to let you know)

There’s no reason not to take 10 levels of the SPECIAL increase perk (can’t remember the name offhand). Most of the offered perks are lame anyway.

fortris's avatar

Where is the mechanist, I can’t find him in the robot repair center

sacaver's avatar

if you absolutely need it…

mechanist

bodyhead's avatar

Hey if you’re talking about the mechanic to get a robot companion, you’re better off on your own. You don’t get exp for anything you partner gets the last hit on or anything where they do the primary amount of damage.

edit: ahh I see, the quest mechanic is what you were talking about.

YES! Finally! Jeez, I’ve been looking over an hour!

Indeed, Fallout 3 is so large that unless you’re purposefully not wandering and exploring, you’ll easily gain enough experience to make both the Here and Now perk and Swift Learner perk useless.

Another tip for the thorough explorer, during character creation or throughout the game, don’t make any of your SPECIAL values above 10, or your skills beyond 90, as there are Bobbleheads hidden around the world for each of the SPECIAL attributes and each of the skills (increases SPECIAL by one point, and skills by 10).

Lol, I love the Entrance to his “Lair”

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

I fell for the swift learner trap. I’m tempted to start over, but I’m not really sure if I want to.

I’m about 80% done at level 18. Oh, do I love this game so—especially the first time I was travelling the wasteland at dusk and caught a glimpse of the Washington monument I had just left.

Contemplating whether I’ll want to replay the game as an evil character.

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

I always have a terrible time playing evil characters in video games. I know it’s not real and all, but I still feel bad when I punch pregnant women in the stomach or throw babies off of catwalks or engage in other equal nefarious activities.

WARNING: casual description of minor Fallout 3 events occur, avoid if you don’t want to taint the game.

@MrMeltedCrayon, I feel the same way. I’m RPing a good character in Fallout for many similar reasons. Managed to, erm, neutralize Burke thanks to my Black Widow /Lady Killer perk, that was a nice surprise at the begining of the game. My partner is RPing an evil guy. He’s even a slaver now and he’s made so much money off it. He enjoyed killing then reloading to restore Moira from Megaton. Which he blew up of course. :|

I’ve been lucky to watch my partner play as evil, I don’t think I could really do it, and since I’ve seen many of the evil quest results there’s not an immediate need to. This playthrough was/is a Good character specializing in speech, repair, and small guns. My next playthrough is going to be a Neutral Stealthy Scientist so that I can hack open all the consoles and lockpick through areas. Oh, and using those Stealth Boys that I end up simply selling, no need to steath your way through when guns do it nicely.

andrew's avatar

Oh, that’s funny. I’m my classic thief/sniper/ranger/blah that I find myself playing in every RPG game ever made.

Still, I have to admit that I never really tire of throwing grenades… or even better, planting them on my “victims” (heinous killers, of course).

My SO keeps asking me… are you going to play the game with the neat music??

fortris's avatar

BTW, if anyone’s interested. I managed to beat the main game and 3 major side quests at level 15, as a maxed-out repair/energy weapons/small weapons character on normal.

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

@Dynamic: What a coincidence! My current play through is with a speech/repair/small guns guy! And I don’t like sneaking… maybe that’s just because I’m impatient and therefore no good at it.

I’m tempted to throw some skills points in energy or big guns. I find myself with a crap ton of energy cells all the time and use my laser pistol as a pack up frequently, so I figure it wouldn’t hurt. And big guns? Well, miniguns just seem really awesome.

Anyone know how to get the Brotherhood of Steel to train you in the use of power armor? I nabbed some of a dead paladin and I’m really itchin’ to put it on.

fortris's avatar

@MrMeltedCrayon You have to progress through the story untill you get into the citidel

andrew's avatar

@mrmeltedcrayon: It becomes obvious during the course of the game. Just give it a little time.

Really? You don’t like sneaking? Oh, it’s my favorite. Headshots + sneak attack critical. My luck is amped up and I have all the critical perks. Sneak, small guns, energy weapons for me, with lockpick at 75, science at 50, explosives, and speech up there too.

andrew's avatar

Has anyone been frustrated by the NPC’s? I finally found one I liked, and then walked down the hall to have a message that “she had died”. And of course, no saved game for a few hours. Boo!

fortris's avatar

@andrew Yeah, I was with Fawkes and I (pardon the pun) raided a raider camp, and he did not follow me and stayed in the previous area, only to have a sentry bot show up and kill him.

dynamicduo's avatar

Energy is really worthwhile once you get to the part in the main quest where the Enclave come in, cause they’re all wielding energy weapons. As well, the AP cost to use these in VATS is way lower than with small guns. My partner can shoot three times in VATS with a Chinese Assault Rifle but can shoot 6 times with the Laser Rifle. And the of course the Alien Blaster is one of the best weapons in the game, though good luck finding more ammo for it.

That said, the BoS Outcasts will take in your technology (mostly Laser and plasma rifles) in exchange for ammo, which can be really handy if you choose not to use them.

I’ve been collecting all the BoS armour I find in the wastelands and repairing it in my home. Eventually I’ll have a nice strong suit, which I’ll probably sell off cause I don’t find it really fits my playing method this time.

Sneaking is handy at times, and can be really handy if you want to steal passwords/keys from people. But I don’t find it terribly appealing. I used it during my lower levels but now that I’m pretty strong I can just wipe em out. And I’m playing on hard mode.

BTW, I haven’t met her myself, but apparently Fawkes is a female. Or was a female before becoming an androgynous Super Mutant. :)

dynamicduo's avatar

I haven’t bothered with any NPC for just that reason, andrew. I’ll probably want to partner with someone when I go through as a Scientist though. And Dogmeat, I figured I’d pass on him this play though and get him next for the same reason.

@dynamicduo: C’mon! Spoiler alert! Boo!

dynamicduo's avatar

Sorry, I had already given a spoiler alert in a previous comment, I guess I need to give one in every comment.

I was just going to edit and add in a spoiler warning, but I see I can’t edit posts after a certain amount of time. Oh well, I tried.

@dynamicduo: Fair enough.
