Is it dangerous to use the same password for different accounts on the internet?

Asked by arcoarena (692points) November 24th, 2008

I have three different passwords that I use across the internet and one that i’ve used since 7th grade and use 90% of the time all usually with the same screen name for all of them. (minus fluther to keep some level of anonymity in case someone I know is on here and reads a question i would prefer they not read. which is one of the things i love most about fluther)

but anyway is it dangerous to have the same password for all of my different accounts?

1. because if someone finds out one they know them all.

2. can admins of websites get my password and use it maliciously to hack other websites i use?

Honestly, odds are you’re not that interesting.
Are you Tom Cruise? Do you currently have in your possession top-secret intelligence vital to the United States government? No?

You aren’t a target.

Your friends might think it’s hilarious to figure it out, but that then begs the question:
Do you have douche bag friends? :)

P.S. For Bank accounts and sensitive information, I use unique passwords and usernames. I suggest you try that.

But what about identity thieves and whatnot getting into my email and getting other info to get into my bank account and blahdeblah.

i was recently subject to 250 dollars getting used on my bank card in 2 months and i had to file an affidavit and everything with my bank.

You should never use the same password for any two accounts that you have, this makes it way too easy for a hacker to know everything about you. If you have multiple accounts, you should make sure that you write down the passwords, and keep them in a very safe place. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

<<ahem>> I hate it when people call guessing a password ‘hacking’.

@asmonet, great point. It is usually guess work, but when a person does nothing all day but sit there in front of the screen and trying to get into many different accounts doing no good once they are in, can be considered ‘hacking’ I think.

Nah, the people who are out to make a buck off a stranger let the computers work for them. They’re not sitting there. :)
