Do you think it is right for the charities to close apps. for help for christmas on dec. first?

Asked by rossi_bear (753points) December 15th, 2008

my sister in law has ased for help and they said they can’t help because they closed the applications on the first of December. I find that is totally wrong of them closing it so soon. there are still many days left.

If they’re out of money and stuff there’s not much more they can do.

They aren’t out of money or toys. They just said that the apps. was closed.

It takes a lot of planning, effort, manpower, time, resources, etc, to fulfill the help that’s been asked so far. If they left it open till very late, they wouldn’t be able to organize the help in time. Plus they probably have a limit on the resources they can give out anyway, so it could be they closed applications at the beginning of December because they know they wouldn’t have enough to give to latecomers.

I think their approach is better than if they had kept applications open while their resources dwindled. Because in that case, the person still has hope while filing in the application; when the org run out of resources and can’t fulfill the last number of applications they now take away that hope, rather than if they had closed applications at the start which would cause people to find other ways to help themselves.

I understand what you are saying but to close it so early I think is wrong. Maybe by the 10 would have been better. But by the first is just wrong. My family has a logging company and they have been out of work since oct. due to the conditions of the woods, it is to wet. so they really need the help.I have told her many places to go but she is in the woods and can’t get down here to call around. so I was doing it for her once I found out that she needed the help. And that is what i was told, the apps. have been closed.I don’t think that they should have closed them so soon. But I do agree that they shoudl have a time limit, just not that soon.I pray that others don’t have this problem!!

Why not contact the organization directly and ask them why they closed their applications?

I suspect that the reason will be what has already been suggested….

Things are tight everywhere. Donations are down as more people than usual are hurting. For this same reason more people than ever are needing aid.

I did that snoopy. They told me that they just stop taking apps.on Dec. first every year.

Honestly, from a logistics perspective, it is best to close apps early. Dec 1 is a good cut off. The reason is that if this is the adopt a family style charity or Christmas angel thing, you need to get the Angel Trees out by the beginning of the season. If you don’t have the entire holiday season to work on getting stuff in, there’s a good chance you won’t get something for everyone.

Once December hits, those charities usually need to switch gears from “who needs help” to “helping in a hurry”. They have a flurry of activity and need to reassign need assessors to action folks. It sucks for people who don’t know this and don’t get their info in on time, but ultimately helps everyone else more.

Still, if your school or classroom usually has an angel tree or adopts a family, you can talk with them quietly about this situation and see if your sister can become one of the anonymous families your school/communitycenter/whatever helps.

You can also ask local churches. Explain what happened. There may be a family or two that will help your sisters kids with gifts. The best Christmas I ever had with my kids was the year I was the most broke.

@empresspixie.. thank you. I have asked her to do that too. and she is on the list as of Friday. The reason for not getting it in sooner is they planned on getting back to work. but in the logging business you can’t touch the woods if the woods are wet. so with the weather being like it is don’t help. it thaws and the froeezes makes it impossiable to get in to the woods legally. the gamewarden shuts them down and has the say on when they can go in.

@judi .. thank you. I have been doing that today for her too. I have had one that is going to help. The church that is helping her is very disappointed in our town assistance that they donate all the money too and had no idea that they would do such a thing, so they are going to help her. God is good!!
