Does anyone know of a good, reliable wireless internet service that is available in Iraq?

Asked by kwhull (547points) March 8th, 2009

My son is serving with the Army National Guard in Basrah, Iraq. The internet service that the military has there does not seem to be working very well. He is constantly being “kicked” off-line. This is the main way that he would like to keep in contact with his children. Has anyone had experience with internet services there? He would like to get a service that he and several of his buddies could share. I’ve looked online some but cannot find prices and things like that. Thanks all for your help! I need to find something soon, my cell phone bills are about to kill me!!

Has he asked around the base? I’m betting he’s not the only one being constantly kicked off. Also, you might want to check with a soldier support organization. They might be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks, the site looks like one I’ve checked out before. And yes, he has asked around base. Everyone there is just using the crappy miliary svc. Its not very reliable. We’ll keep searching.

Here at Ali AB, Sniper Hill is offered: http://sniperhill.com/contact.php. Don’t know if they are at the base he is stationed at though. It’s pretty expensive, $88 a month for 128kbps, but it’s worth it to me, as I’m online a lot and can stay in my room without having to walk to the rec center to use the free WiFi.

It is Iraq though, outages should be expected. Sniper Hill goes down every week or two for a day or so. It’s a hassle, but I’ll take what I can get in the middle of the desert.
