Hmm, well to recommended dose is between 200 to 400mgs, every 4 to 6 hours, for an adult.
I personally usually take 400mg, every 5ish hours, but i used to take it a lot more than that, like 600mg every 4hrs, which caused me to have rebound headaches. Your body gives you signals that you are taking too much, usually.
this site seems good. i haven’t read it all..
“The toxicity of ibuprofen overdose is dependent upon the amount of drug ingested and the time elapsed since ingestion, though individual response may vary, which makes it necessary to evaluate each case individually.”

It depends on the person, their weight, and the last time they took it. I think they go by symptoms and if you have been taking an excessive amount, that it builds up.

Let me say that I am an RN (Bachelor degree) working towards my master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner. The recommended dosages for Motrin are 400mg every 4 hours, 600mg every 6 hours and 800mg every 8 hours. The 600 and 800mg are considered prescription dosages. Typically a person will not overdose in the manner you are probably thinking. But you will damage your liver and can go into liver failure which will kill you. Also, too much Motrin can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. Motrin is an NSAID which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It is contraindicated with many blood pressure meds. SO….take Motrin as the bottle says to. There are too many risks for taking more than you should.

@patg7590 that’s what i have (among the other things in my “pharmacy”). so two of those would be too much huh

@ptarnbsn Thanks for the dosage breakdown

I’ve taken 800mg as well. It was a prescription. I’m a pretty small person, too, if that makes any difference.

toxic effects are unlikely at doses below 100 mg/kg but can be severe above 400 mg/kg; however, large doses do not indicate that the clinical course is likely to be lethal. It is not possible to determine a precise lethal dose, as this may vary with age, weight, and concomitant diseases of the individual patient.

Dunno if this adds anything that hasn’t been said

@TaoSan Great additional info. You may need to expand on the mg/kg for those that don’t understand that terminology.

Oh, you’re right! Well, for those who don’t know, since almost any substance’s effects on the body strongly depend on the body’s mass and composition, there isn’t a one-fits-all adverse/lethal dose.

Thus, the results of clinical studies are presented in how much substance per Kilogramm (roughly 2 pounds) of body weight are active/adverse/lethal.

This is done to account for the strong variation in reaction to a dose of say a 230 pound quarterback compared to a slender 140 pound teenager.

Well done. Thanks!

I want to add to my previous statement. Although Motrin can be harmful to the liver (many drugs are cleared thru the liver), an overdose has the potential to cause nephropathy (kidney disease) leading to kidney failure. Again, as I said….take as directed. Just because they are over the counter doesn’t mean one cannot overdose on them.
