Does anyone else have this weird drug interaction?

Asked by evelyns_pet_zebra (12923points) March 27th, 2009

For as long as I can remember, I have never been able to build up a tolerance to drugs. Even when I was a chronic pot smoker, one or two hits was all I needed to get really freaking high. I have been on xanax for years for anxiety, and even after taking it all this time, I only need a little bit to get the effect. It’s the same way with alcohol, and I’ve been called a lightweight because of it. Is anyone else familiar with this reaction to repeated drug use? I don’t know of anyone else that has the same problem.

I am the same way…
Nice to meet ya, fellow cheap date!

@Likeradar great, wanna split a xanax sometime?

Likeradar's avatar

@totally! Or an 8th… between the two of us, it could last 3 months.

I have one friend that had the same reaction to drugs as I do. We were chemical soul mates.
I don’t even pretend to understand how the brain reacts to drugs, I wish I knew..I find it fascinating. I’m sure other posters will help :)

hahaha at 1/8th of a xanax, i’ve taken two bars and it just makes me sleepy but normal, that’s when i had terrible anxiety.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@casheroo, I was reading about that very thing the other day, and how the same dose of a well known drug can cause completely different reactions in two different people.

Likeradar's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra I meant an 8th of… yeah. (I’m still in the phase where admitting to drugs knowledge on the interwebs seems to be dangerous)

I knew what you meant, and I once made an ounce last almost six months. I was a such a little bogart.

It’s likely your genes. Some cultures for example are less tolerant of alcohol because they were exposed to it only during colonization. The majority of Native American Tribes for example. I’ve also heard it said that if you can quit drinking for seven generations the same affect is likely to take place. Those children born after seven generations won’t be affected by the alcohol use of their predecessors environmentally or physically. I think that last bit is theorizing but the first bit has some research behind it.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@RedPowerLady well, the people on my Dads’ side of the family are Belgian, and my Mom’s are Irish/Scottish, both well known historical users of alcohol. I should be able to drink like a fish and not fall down!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra I stand corrected! LOL

casheroo's avatar

oh noes! i have native american in me somewhere…my children are doomed to be lightweights

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@casheroo, just remember, if your parents don’t have any kids, you won’t either!

RedPowerLady's avatar

@casheroo sounds like it, better warn them when you can, lol

I’m a lightweight with booze, but that’s about it. I have a stupidly high tolerence for uppers, opiates, and benzos. :( sucks.

I seem to get stupid drunk on the smallest amounts of alcohol. Meds are the same way. With all that I’ve taken, while going through treatments, I still have such a low tolerance for them. Especially things like Ambien, Xanax, and Valium. Anything that I can split and not cause it to alter the process of the drug or make it harmful to take, I split it.

Im the same way, and i LOVE IT. Drugs dont cost me a ton of money :) I smoke everyday and a quarter lasts me two weeks easy. I only need a 16th of shrooms to be completely tripping face.

As for pills, blah you can keep em.

Ok, how’s this for a new twist… Like you, I’m a lightweight when it comes to alcohol and Xanax. One beer and I’m tipsy, 1/2 a Xanax and the anxiety is under control. A whole Xanax makes me too tired to function properly, and is only used when extreme measures are necessary. On the other hand, I can take all manner of narcotic pain killers (including Morphine) and not only does it not knock me out, it doesn’t even lessen my pain! How unfair is that?

I’m the same way when I smoke pot, which is exactly why I don’t smoke it anymore. I never used to have that problem as a teen, but the older I got, it took nothing to screw me up. After one hit I would be high out of my mind and I’d want to run and hide because the only other people I knew who actually smoked pot were stoners. Very embarrassing.

With alcohol, I never know what my tolerance level is going to be, so I always have to take it slowly.

I experimented with mushrooms when I was younger and it never affected me the way it did other people. Everyone always talked about colors emanating from people and things in general, and all I could think was, “Huh? Where?”. Even the time my friends and I had an 8th – each – I never saw anything. However, I did feel insane and vowed to never, ever do that again.

I also experimented with ecstasy when I was a little younger, but I’m fairly sure I had the typical reaction on that. Ah, youth.

Back in the day, I smoked pot everyday, and I got to where I did cocain almost everyday, havent done that now for over 10 yrs, but because I did so much for so long, I now have a very high tolerance for meds. I makes it hard to get what I need from the doctors, because some just assume I might be abusing, when thats not the case at all, Its a real pain in the butt, I only wish I had a low tolerance, my meds would last alot longer…

You people are insane to admitting to doing illegal drugs in a public forum

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@augustlan that is stupidly unfair, and about as unfair as the fact that I am allergic to codeine and all its derivatives.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Cardinal well, I haven’t smoked pot since the early 90’s, so I don’t think I can be busted for it now. Nothing illegal in my system and hasn’t been for a decade. I’m old, I now get all my drugs at Wal-Greens.

DrasticDreamer's avatar

@Cardinal It’s the same for me as it is evelyns pet zebra. That was the past and I doubt I’ll be arrested now for what I did in my youth.

cak's avatar

@cardinal – What I’m doing isn’t illegal. All to deal with cancer or another issue going on. I don’t do illegal drugs. I’m too confused as it is…I don’t need any help.

augustlan's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra I am allergic to Codeine, too… and even wearing a bright orange “Allergic to Codeine” bracelet in the hospital doesn’t stop them from trying to give it to me. My advice? Always ask what medication is in the little cup. Always.
