How to make my internet faster at an apartment complex?

Asked by Rememberme (661points) July 20th, 2009

I live in an apartment complex where the majority of the tenets are college students. and my internet is VERY slow, I cant watch a youtube video without it having to buffer for a few minutes. I can only imagine how many other different people are downloading movies and music. To connect to the internet all i have to do is plug my Ethernet cable into the wall. beyond that I do not know what I could do to increase the internet speed if that is even possible.

I have talked to the management, but really… they aren’t much help. I guess i am sacrificing fast internet for an affordable place to live

Who is providing your internet connection? The apartment complex? If so, they’re probably doing it pseudo-legally, having the entire building under one “account”, all sharing bandwidth. I would suggest calling the local cable/sattelite/DSL company and getting yourself a dedicated account.

internet is included in my rent so i dont know who the provider is. There is a separate company who manages the internet in the buildings. There is a shed attached to the side of the building that have a much of routers or switches. To me it just looks like blinking lights and cables. And that separate company comes out the service the shed when anything goes seriously wrong.

Sounds very fishy to me. I stand by my suggestion – either deal with the fact that your entire building is getting served from the same limited amount of bandwidth, or pay for your own individual account.

Of course your entire building is getting the same internet access as you…it is in their rental agreement(s), too. Also, neighbors in the area are piggy-backing onto this obviously open signal.
You will need to do as Itty says. And I suggest you make your new internet access security-enabled, so you don’t get the same problem.
