Whats the best router to get for cheap?

Asked by tocutetolive90 (888points) July 26th, 2009

My router broken today so I’m trying to figure out what type of router to buy. I don’t want a really expensive one cause i just need it for the next 3 months. But I’m not sure what router would be the best to go with. I mostly use my internet for gaming. I’m not even sure which routers will work with my modem, so I’m just gonna try to find one and try it out if it doesn’t work I can always return it. Any suggestions?

This is looking pretty good. I have a Netgear router and it has worked fine for a year. And that is only 30 bucks.

I like Linksys.

Their G routers are great, reliable, and very cheap. Check out the WRT54G

You can get one new or used…they’re everywhere! I’ve been using this model in my dorm room and it works like a charm.

Look on craigslist.org, especially if you live near a largish city – people give them away for free quite often on there.

I was going to recommend the WRT54G as well (more specifically, the 54GL as you can change its firmware), but this is generally a high quality and not too cheap router. You can certainly find cheaper ones, but generally with routers, my experience is that cheapness directly correlates to very low lifespan. Then again, three months should be within that low lifespan.

+1 for the WRT54G. Great lil router, you can get higher gain antennas for it and improve its firmware as well.
