What should I, the groom, wear to my wedding at the beach?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) August 13th, 2009

So, I will having my wedding at a beach and was wondering what I should wear. I’m thinking a nice pair of khakis and a white button down shirt or just the normal tux. What do you think and where could I look on-line for my attire?

White linen pants and a white linen shirt seems to be popular, but I reckon kakis and a white shirt with a grandad collar would be nice to (what does your wife to be think>)

Tux top, swiming trunks bottom, one dress shoe, one flipper.

Done! Next Q!

Since we might do the beach wedding too i actually went out and bought a white and kaki suit.. both linen. Either works i guess (i hope).

I was going to say an “I’m with stupid” tee, but @sandystrachan‘s already got me beat, before I throw my cards down.

You could keep it secret and paint yourself the same colour as sand , crawl in and surprise everyone .

I would talk to your partner about it. Your soon-to-be partner would probably want some input.

erichw1504's avatar

@johnpowell That is what we’re deciding between, either tux or something casual.

@erichw1504 What about dressing formal but have it tailored so it can be ripped off in one go (velcro i suppose) to reveal bathing suits and run in the water? For both of you?

Wedding should be more fun then formal, but maybe that’s just me.

It seems to me that if you were getting married on a beach, you’d want to go into the water at some point. So I’m with @InspecterJones. You’d need a swim suit underneath. Or, for that matter, on top.

What is the bride planning to wear? I would base my choice on that.

Full-out wedding dress and veil = tuxedo

A mildly dressy white dress = white linen suit

Some sort of sundress = khaki pants and white shirt

Bathing suit = bathing suit

In your place I would wear whatever the bride tells me to wear.

RareDenver's avatar

As a former groom I would have to agree with @Jeruba get a shortlist together of things you would be comfortable with and give her the final say.

InspecterJones's avatar

@Jeruba You can’t start off the marriage that way, FIGHT THE POWER!

/me looks around to make sure gf isn’t watching this.

Jeruba's avatar

As a former bride, I would say, “Darlin’, I’ll be in charge of putting on, and you can be in charge of taking off.”

wundayatta's avatar

@Jeruba Music to my ears…. Now, if only you could teach my wife that principle…. ;-)

More seriously: unless the bride is expecting to be surprised, you should be able to discuss your wedding attire—at least in terms of general style and level of formality—and make a joint decision. (And I hope the guests are also being given a clue as to how to dress.) If you can’t work out and agree upon your plans for the wedding, how are you going to meet the many challenges of married life?

InspecterJones's avatar

@Jeruba Easy; Magic 8 Ball.

I’m totally with @InspecterJones, I myself want a beach wedding or something of the sort but the cliche linen is just more than I can bare.
Best of luck!

It really depends on what the bride is wearing, and if you are a really smart guy, you will ask her to take you shopping, pick out your clothes and smile at her adoringly the whole time.

I was real lucky when i got married what i wore went with everything the kilt , then again the kilt was my choice and she wouldn’t of had a say in it :)

Jeruba's avatar

@sandystrachan, I admire a Scot who always breaks out the kilt for formal occasions. I have known quite a few in my time, and it is always a pleasure to see them in full dress.

when i was in Scotland last time, I saw an awesome wedding kilt in a shoppe window. It was tweed with a matching jacket and vest. Dude, i’m not Scottish (directly), but i’d totally sport that if i was marrying a Scottish lass.

the wedding dress with the tartan work in it was none too shabby either. quite sexy, actually.

Tux shirt, tie, and coat. Swimming trunks.
or
hawaiian shirt and dockers, barefoot.

Kilts are awewome! One of my daughter’s friends wears a black cotton kilt, white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, close-fitting vest buttoned up vest, combat boots. Very cool, ultra-masculine look.

It depends on whether you are having a catered, formal wedding. Be sure your idea is the same thing the bride is thinking.

I have observed several beach weddings from my vacation beach condo, and the brides and grooms usually arrive by limo and wear full tux and bridal dress.
