My brother gained weight because he had the major munchies. It was horrible. He ate 2–4 loafs of bread everytime. So it depends on how hungery it makes you while you are high. I can’t tell you for myself, cause I have never gotten high

Tink's avatar

It makes you skinny if you start smoking it slowly, and if you constantly do it there is a chance you might get fat.

ronski's avatar

@Tink1113 What do you mean, do it slowly? Like once in a while?

Tink's avatar

@ronski No I mean, not smoke alot of it, small portions.

drdoombot's avatar

Because it stimulates hunger, I would lean towards marijuana making you gain weight.

Sarcasm's avatar

I have a friend who lost significant weight since he started smoking marijuana, as far as I know he hasn’t had any major changes.

DarkScribe's avatar

If you are a pothead – you don’t care about weight.

Most of those I know who are genuine potheads are skinnier that normal.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

why do you think they call it ‘dope’ anyway? ~

Sarcasm's avatar

My dictionary tells me that dope, aside from being a drug term, is a term for stupidity. What’s intelligence got to do with weight?

Mixed with apple cider vinegar, it assures weight loss, cures cancer, can be used as a floor wax and a dessert topping, and removes moles from the sides of dog’s faces.

Everyone’s right about the munchies. If someone needs to avoid too much food, then drinking lots of water when the marijuana munchies hits… helps.

I also know Arnold Shwarzenegger used to smoke it before he worked out. He said so himself in his Pumping Iron bio. That’s before he worked out, not after.

Lots of water or juice along with exercise, can cancel or postpone the munchies.

In my experience, when I was smoking weed the most, I was the most active I’ve ever been. I lost plenty of weight by smoking daily.

A while ago. Now, I’m pretty sure I’m not getting the same effect. But in college, things were different.

deni's avatar

See I think it totally depends on the person and the circumstances. Because sometimes when I smoke I don’t want to do ANYTHING but sit and talk about the Pilgrims or the moon. So I just sit for hours and eat chips and stuff. But other times I wanna go for a fuckin 4 mile run, and I do, and I feel great and pumped up and like I could run forever. But I think mostly I just get munchies and eat a ton of food. But I haven’t gained any weight yet so I guess I still haven’t come to a firm answer.

casheroo's avatar

It never affected my weight.

essieness's avatar

I noticed that I actually lost a little weight when I was smoking more. Supposedly smoking pot speeds up your metabolism which is what gives you the munchies, so as long as you don’t give in to the munchies, you’re golden. I don’t know how true that is, it’s just what I’ve heard. I do know that smoking more lowered my stress level. I know that some people eat when they’re stressed.

generalspecific's avatar

Now that I think about it, around the time when I began smoking heavily I also lost ten pounds. It was over like a three month span or something though. I hadn’t really changed my eating habits or anything, so perhaps it was the weed.

Here’s the abstract from a research study I found:

Effects of smoked marijuana on food intake and body weight of humans living in a residential laboratory.
Author: Foltin, R W : Fischman, M W : Byrne, M F
Citation: Appetite. 1988 Aug; 11(1): 1–14

Abstract: Six adult male research volunteers, in two groups of three subjects each, lived in a residential laboratory for 13 days. All contact with the experimenter was through a networked computer system and subjects’ behaviors, including food intake, were continuously recorded. During the first part of the day, subjects remained in continuously recorded. During the first part of the day, subjects remained in their private rooms doing planned work activities, and during the remainder of the day, they were allowed to socialize. Two cigarettes containing active marijuana (2.3% delta 9 THC) or placebo were smoked during both the private work period and the period of access to social activities. Smoked active marijuana significantly increased total daily caloric intake by 40%. Increased food intake was evident during both private and social periods. The increase in caloric intake was due to an increased consumption of snack foods as a consequence of an increase in the number of snacking occasions. There was no significant change in caloric consumption during meals. The principal increase within the category of snack foods was in the intake of sweet solid items, e.g., candy bars, compared to sweet fluid, e.g., soda, or savory solid items, e.g., potato chips. Increases in body weight during periods of active marijuana smoking were greater than predicted by caloric intake alone.

I think it depends on the strain of MJ, the person, and the circumstances. Different strains of MJ give you different kinds of highs with different kinds of (side) effects such as paranoia, the munchies, euphoria, focus, relief of nausea, etc. Any smoker who’s a connoisseur of sorts can attest to this. A habitual user who doesn’t normally including healthy eating choices or exercise in their daily regimen would obviously gain weight from the munchies.

Darwin's avatar

Typically, it causes weight gain. Folks with AIDS and some cancers smoke it both to allay nausea but also to make them want to eat and thus keep their body weight up.

It is possible to lose weight sometimes while smoking marijuana because some people end up skipping regular meals and just live on the junk they eat because of the munchies.

seventeen123's avatar

when i used to smoke weed i didn’t gain weight!
that is.. until i quit. like ten pounds just magically added on.

galileogirl's avatar

There is no caloric value in marijuana so it doesn’t make a difference. It’s a matter of how zonked you get. If you sit around all day drinking and eating junk food you will get heavier whether you are smoking or not. But if you go a bit further and you lose your mimimum wage job and you can’t get your ass off the couch long enough to shoplift at 7/11, that will be an effective weight loss routine.

saraaaaaa's avatar

In my experience most heavy stoners are so broke that the weed is the only thing they can buy, even chosen over food so they tend to be so skinny they might snap. Not completely down to the Marajuana though.

Garebo's avatar

It depends on the location it’s grown. As I recall, most good weed is grown in volcanic soils, rich in mercury, so I would say you would probably lose weight.

ShanEnri's avatar

I gained because the munchies were just uncontrollable!

malzy4's avatar

I have smoked almost daily for the past four years. That is roughly 4–6 blunts a day. I dont smoke from pipe or bowl. for some reason i get the munchies worse if i smoke from a bowl.
Now in regards to gaining, I have only gained.
i am a woman and i started smoking my first year in college. my husband and are are closet pot heads. no one would think we smoked. I started smoking when i was 150lbs Now i am almost 200 lbs.
my husband and i recently decided to quit because of the expense, 4–6 blunts a day equals approx 40$ a day of weed where i am from. Since we quit 3 weeks ago i have lost without trying 15 lbs and my husband has lost 10. so i believe weed does not make you lose weight. some can either maintain or gain.

galileogirl's avatar

So pot makes you gain weight, burn through $thousands/year’ and prevents you from being honest with others. What’s the down side?

Kraigmo's avatar

It’s either No Effect. or Gain Weight.

I’ve never heard of someone losing weight due to its use, unless its used as part of an exercise regimen, the way Schwarzenegger used to.

babyboo's avatar

i smoke weed everyday and since im stoned im not bothered about eating or forget as im concentrating on other things, ive gone days with out food before n just smoked weed n drank tea n stuf
most people who smoke weed are normal weight.
when i have the munchies im always way way too stoned to be arsed to even go get some food, instead if its late on at night il just go to sleep, another way of gaining energy, so its sorta just a pattern that repeats it self.
so answering your questions does weed make u gain weight, no it doesnt with most people.

sky876's avatar

If you are addicted to weed and use it to make yourself happy then you may be doing that because you are depressed. Depression can lead to weight gain cant it? Also when you get the munchies if you are still thinking, instead of rushing to the freezer for chimichangas, drink a couple glasses of water and the feeling will pass, or find something like tea or smoothie that is a healthy munchie. Avoid the food that does make you gain wait whether you were high when you ate it or not.

ridicawu's avatar

I used to smoke quite a bit. About a quarter every 3 days or so. I had decided to quit (I relied on it a bit too much to help manage stress) and ever since I’ve gained weight. About 15 pounds worth. I’ve smoked maybe 4 times since I was a big time smoker, but yeah. It’s really strange. I figured I’d lose more weight but I gained and now I’m looking at weight loss programs and stuff. Booo.

deni's avatar

@ridicawu a quarter every three days. holy hell lol

ridicawu's avatar

Yeah…. I mean, it was usually between my friend and I… but I had a lot of free time and enough money at the time…. But I smoked a lot. Hahah.

DonnaDon's avatar

I think that smoking marijuana make you fat because it stimulates hunger. And also marijuana attack brain and smokers can loss their memory.
