Good place to live in NY/NJ?

Asked by sebpaul (6points) October 25th, 2009

My company is relocating me from Minneapolis suburbs to our office in Manhattan, NY. I am looking for a better place to live around NY area with a good school system(I have kids going to preschool). I will be staying in apartment and I don’t have any plans to buy a house. I am looking for good locations within 1 hr travel distinace from NYC and a good area to grow up my children.

Scarsdale, NY is north of Manhattan, with great school system and some apartment buildings. You’ll commute to midtown by train and either walk or subway to your offices.

There are some nice places in Brooklyn, depending on price ranges.

The BEST place to live would be Hoboken NJ. It is an amazing option to those who want it all. It is 10 minutes to nyc via the path train. A huge majority of the apartment buildings are new, and rent at great prices. The restaurant, club, and bar scene is amazing (there’s even a W Hotel). It is quiet, but not boring. It’s on the water, directly across from Manhattan. Best views of nyc anywhere. It is THE place to live.

Cobble Hill is one of those nice places in Brooklyn.

@sebpaul Your colleagues in your office in Manhattan who have made a similar transition ( i.e. not your hardcore native Manhattanites/Brooklynites, etc ) will have good recommendations as well. I doubt it will include the ‘highlife’ in Hoboken!

Philadelphia, and take the train in. Tons of people do it, and the schools and lifestyle are great.

I’m a NJ native and I will start off by assuring you that the state is not as bad as everyone says! In looking for places to live, I would suggest looking at the NJ Transit map (link below) and look for towns along the train line. I would suggest Maplewood, Millburn, and the Oranges as they are pretty close to Manhattan with an easy train commute and, from what I have heard, good school systems. When Christie Whitman was governor, NJ also began to support “tranisit-oriented development” (or TOD) and there are a number of apartment buildings that have popped along the train lines, including a new apartment complex in Morristown, which is about 50–60 minutes on the train to Penn Station. Best of luck finding your new home!

I live in the Catskills and it’s beautiful….you could take a train from Beacon and be there in a little over an hour. Beacon has apartments as well as art and even a museum. It’s right on the river….absolutely beautiful setting.

Thank you all for being very helpful. I have been used to living just 2 miles away from my office for past 10 years. This is going to be a big change for me:-). Could you just let me know the rent range for decent 2BR apartment?

Rents look like ~ $3000 – 4000 and up per month
