When you get a lot of mail, does the mailman have to stuff it all into the box on that day?

Asked by Ansible1 (4841points) October 30th, 2009

The magazine I subscribe to came in the mail today, but also had many other pieces of mail. So the mailman just stuffed it in the mailbox, and when I took it out it was all creased and bent and deformed. I’m really not that upset about it, but I can understand someone getting upset at receiving a magazine they pay for in such a poor condition. This brings up an interesting dilema, what if you happen to receive an enormous amount of mail one day, so much that it can’t all fit inside the mailbox, will the mailman have to keep it until the next delivery day?

Damnit AstroChuck, show some respect for other people’s stuff!

Actually, the carrier can put a note in the box saying that it was too full, so you need to go to the post office and pick up the mail for that day. They don’t “keep” it so they can deliver it later. They just take it back to the PO and put it on the “to be picked up” shelf.

I suspect the best thing to do is make friends with your carrier so they know that you would rather go to the PO and pick the mail up yourself rather than have it be all crushed.

My mailbox gets so stuffed that I sometimes need to yank on the papers a couple of times before I can get any of it out. It’s pure madness.

No. If a box is full then the mail is supposed to be removed and a form 3849 (that’s that beige slip you’ve probably seen that tells you there’s a package or something at the PO waiting for you) is left in its place informing you that you can pick it up at the post office. But instead of harping on your letter carrier how about picking up your damn mail regularly? That’s my number one pet peeve when delivering to apartments or NDCBU (cluster boxes).

Sorry, @Darwin. Just read your response, which pretty much covers it.

@AstroChuck – But I’m not a professional so I can’t give the form number with such authority. I just ship thousands of books each year so I am familiar as a user.
