Why won't my computer turn on?

Asked by erikaVT (207points) November 2nd, 2009

I have an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop (64-bit AMD) and a lot of times when I turn it on, the lights come on but the screen is black and nothing is happening. I will turn it off and turn it back on, I will wait- NOTHING happens. What’s the deal?

Are there any beeps when you turn on the laptop?
Do you hear any of the mechanisms spinning up?

You may need to re-seat your RAM

@The_Compassionate_Heretic There is a beep when I turn it off. And when I turn it on, I hear a little spinning, and like I said, the charge/power light and stuff come on. The screen is just black and the caps lock and number lock lights flash.

@NaturalMineralWater What does that do? How do I do that?

It is working now (obviously), but this happens ALL the time. Can you tell that I’m a girl?

If it was a problem with your battery, you’d have no power.
Sounds like a potential problem with the motherboard or memory.

In any event, you’re looking at getting it serviced at this point.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic Ugh, I just got it in September. Thank you so much anyways!

If your RAM is loose it can cause this problem. But being that it is periodic and not constant.. you’re looking at a different problem. Since you just got it in Sept isn’t it still on warranty?

erikaVT's avatar

@NaturalMineralWater Probably. I guess I will look into that tomorrow. I just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar problem or a solution. But if I have to take it in, I have to take it in..

Thanks so much you guys!

@erikaVT I have lots of solutions for you but they all void your warranty unfortunately. Best to just take it in and get it fixed. =)

I have the same laptop and had the exact same problem. Long story short:

You need your BIOS updated. If it’s already not turning on, then you’ll need to send it to HP to have them update it.

Good news: You can get this done free. It’s a known problem and there’s something or another on their site that says you should send it in and get it done free.
Bad news: They will do EVERYTHING possible to get you to buy the warranty if you’re out of warranty. But it IS free and it is on their site. I don’t have time tomorrow, but if you remind me I’ll try and look through my archives on Wednesday (or sooner if I have time!) and see if I saved the site. But be prepared to spend a ridiculously long time on the phone with HP Customer Service.

Went ahead and looked because I know how much it sucks to be without a computer. Couldn’t find it in my favorites (usually I save this kind of stuff under a ‘techy’ folder) but did a quick search from what I remembered & this is what came up

I’m thinking that might be what you’re looking for. Let me know if it isn’t (I didn’t get a good look at it because I need to go to sleep!)

@erikaVT Excellent! Warranty covered repair!

Thank you guys sooo much! I’m going to look into that today.
