I use the Zune player, because I have a Zune. It works fine for me.

I use iTunes. I was having a problem with Windows Media Player adding music to my library without my permission.

Try them out, see what works best for you.
I absolutely hated iTunes and WMP. I’m in love with Winamp. I gave my reasons elsewhere in a few other questions, I can’t find them with the search function.

iTunes makes me feel, for lack of a better word, uncomfortable. It’s an awkward program.
I love the global hotkeys available with Winamp. I love the amount of control I have with it overall.

When I was a Windows user, I adored Winamp for its plugins and its ability to play weird music formats.

However, I have since switched to Mac and adore iTunes.

I have always disliked Windows Media Player, though. Like some other Windows programs I could mention, it never seemed to “just work” the way Apple programs do. It was buggy and problematic, and couldn’t play certain formats. It also seems to bog down the system when burning or ripping a CD.

I would reserve VLC for video media rather than audio media, as that’s what it’s best at.

I used to use Winamp back in the day, before WMP was any good. Since I got my Vista machine I’ve been using WMP almost exclusively. I’ve tried iTunes and can agree that it’s extremely awkward. My girlfriend got me to try Songbird but I have similar problems with it as well. Really though, all I do with WMP is listen to large lists of music, create playlists every once-in-a-while, and sometimes burn a CD or two. I don’t really need anything more. I may try out Winamp again as this question has piqued my interest in it again.

I have this program called GOM. Its pretty slick because it plays everything and if theres a specific file type it doesn’t play it automatically finds the patch it needs to play it.

I formerly used Winamp until it started to inexplicably crash randomly on my laptop. That is when i switched to QMP (Quintessential Media Player). I still use Winamp on my main PC.

The best player is by far KMPlayer, nobody knows about it, but I tell you, it is the best. You can use it on anything, music, videos, photos, even flash, but music and videos are its true domain. You can do a lot of stuff just from your keyboard. You can easily set to open all the files in folder in playilist if you doubleckick just one. It supports anything without having to download any codecs. Supports many plugins, has decent localization, is not heavy on resourcess. It is packed with features, you just have to see this: http://www.kmplayer.com/
Also looks nice :-)

I use MediaMonkey. It’s better than iTunes in its organizational capabilities and I can skin it, which is fun. It’s capable of working with my iPod Nano and iPhone. Also, all I have to do to add tracks to my library is to go to File>Add/Rescan Tracks>(pick the drives)>OK! Sorted! I can find the album covers online with little hassle and make mass tag changes. :D

I’m very happy with it.
