Significant others past and present, what one band (or musician) reminds you of them?

Asked by Jude (32198points) November 19th, 2009

I was driving home just now and I heard the Eagles’ “Tequila Sunrise” playing on the radio. Immediately, I thought of a guy that I used to date in my teens. He used to play the Eagles all of the time. That band makes me think of him. Then, there’s “Bad Company” for another serious boyfriend (the boy that I almost married—but, then admitted to myself that I was gay, so, that was a no-go). Then I got thinking, for my last girlfriend it was Radiohead. Anytime that I hear music from that band, I think of her. And, now, for my present girlfriend it’s Ray Lamontagne.

Curious, what is it for you?

Swearing at Motorists is the main one that reminds me of the most influential ex. With my current relationship, Bright Eyes.

lurve for Ray Lamontagne; “Burn” is my favorite.

The Streets (especially that Dry Your Eyes song- it’s a doozey).

My husband is Foo Fighters and John Mayer. My ex was Fall-Out Boy and Motion City Soundtrack. My first boyfriend it was orchestral music (we were both in the violin section together).

The Cure reminds me of a guy I was with in college for a few months. He was crazy in love with Robert Smith. Like, crazy to the point of once “joking” (?) that if he ever sleeps with me he’ll be thinking of him. Kinda ruined the Cure for me.

Another guy I dated in college was really into DMX, so every once in a while I put on …Then There Wax X and I feel like I’m 20 again and it makes me giggle. Sin by NIN also reminds me of that guy. What a prick.

My boyfriend, wow, so many different things. Nickleback for comedic reasons. Country, like Emerson Drive, Brad Paisley, etc. Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, Eyedea and Abilities. As well as 90’s rock.

Whichever song is about calling me a million times.

311 reminds me of my high school boyfriend. He was obsessed, and had a 311 cover band.
NIN reminds me of a different high school boyfriend. I remember making out in his room to that. Just makes me laugh.
For some reason, Push It by Salt & Pepper totally reminds me of my one ex. I forget what happened that makes it such a memory. He liked weird techno, but also made me this mixed CD and whenever I hear “Here Comes the Sun” it reminds me of good times with him.
A different ex enjoyed Jewel a little too much. I checked, and he didn’t have a vagina..so not sure what that was about.

Sooo many songs/artists remind me of my husband. Some for silly reasons. Like, Rhianna’s SOS- it came out when we first started dating, we heard it constantly.
Johhny Cash and Bob Dylan bring happy memories. The first time I went to his place, he told me to pick out some music and I just randomly picked music I liked…I guess sort of depressing music, because Johnny Cash’s Hurt was one of the songs. So, we’re getting down and dirty and that depressing song comes on..he just goes “why the hell did you put this song on?” hahaha It was a “you had to be there” moment. :)

For him, I know he says Led Zeppellin and Neil Young are what remind him of me. I listened to it allll the time on the record player he got me when we first started dating.

If You Leave Me Now by Chicago.

Reminds me of my first GF and that first date we went on.

When I hear that song I am right back there again.

Rod Stewart reminds me of my last gf. Leonard Cohen too. We had many songs we listened to together.

Different relationships have been connected to different songs (some of which I wrote).

I don’t remember the artist, but that crappy “She Will Be Loved” song was born and died with one ex-girlfriend. It’s memorable because I would always sing “She will be lunch.”

oh songs… there are a bunch! songs like don’t go away by oasis, hazard by richard marxs, janeiro by solid sessions (awesome song) take me away by 4 strings, also awesome (you should google those 2), missing by everything but the girl, disco 2000 by pulp, crash by suede (I know, you’ve never heard this songs), walking away by craig david, 1979 by the smashing pumpkings, staring at the sun by u2…I can keep going on and on, I can say that those songs are part of my life’s soundtrack… it’s amazing how music can be your own personal time machine, that can kick you back in time…

I think of my first husband when I hear Pink Floyd and Lynard Skynard. We played Free Bird at his funeral and when ever I hear that song, even if I’m in the car with my current husband, everything gets quiet and I shed a tear in my heart.
Also So You Think You Can Tell It was at his funeral too and makes me cry.
-It was Suicide
now you have me crying!

Wild Horses by the Rolling Stones.

Many songs by the Manic Street Preachers.

Any and all Metallica songs.

The Reason by Hoobastank. On my way to being dropped off at home, he “forgot” to turn at the right street about five times while it was playing on the radio and he was singing it to me. That was really early on and I’ll never forget it.

Awh, @DrasticDreamer ; He used to sing Wild Horses to me and play his guitar. :-( .

Eighth grade. First major for-real boyfriend. Junior high academic quarterback asks self-deprecating, bookaholic cheerleader to go steady. Slow dances in the portable buildings every Saturday night. Boys on one side, girls on the other. He doesn’t ever let
“Let it Be” or “Hey Jude” play without crossing that large expanse of linoleum to ask that cheerleader to dance.

But the music that reminds them most of that time (and the LP she bought him for Christmas) was Creedence Clearwater Revival. Oh….yes.

For one bf, Crowded House (good).
For another, Janet Jackson (bad).
And for yet another, Rush (cracks me up if ever I think about it).

My first boyfriend I always think of when I hear “Your Song” from Moulin Rouge because he used to sing it to me. My relationship with another ex (who isn’t really an ex because we never really dated er, officially) is perfectly described by Rilo Kiley’s “Portions for Foxes” so that makes me think of him. As for my first real girlfriend, “Secret” by Missy Higgins totally describes our relationship, and “Come on Eileen” reminds me of her because that was her ringtone. My latest ex? “Geraldine” by Glasvegas and “Sex on Fire” by Kings of Leon both remind me of her because she used to play them allll the time. Any other exes aren’t noteworthy enough that I remember them on a regular basis. :)

A guy I had a major crush on in high school: “Jamie” by dashboard confessional. He used to play is on his guitar and sang it to another girl

My current boyfriend: definitely going to be Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Hard to Concentrate” and generally the entire Stadium Arcadium album. And probably that damn “I Love You” Jamaican song that keeps coming on the radio (I say angrily because he likes it and it gets stuck in my head for days).

sliceswiththings's avatar

@fireinthepriory Haha “Secret” indeed:)

Keane. I got into them when I was with my last boyfriend. Especially “Leaving So Soon,” since we were leaving [study abroad] so soon, and us leaving meant the end of our relationship. Sucks, because I love the band but I can’t listen to them without a wave of uncomfortable emotions.

fireinthepriory's avatar

@sliceswiththings Ok, or so I thought!!! And I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone, so it totally counts. :)

sliceswiththings's avatar

—@fireinthepriory No that was serious! Didn’t find out til way later. There should also be a song called “Oblivious Mutual Friends.”

Like the pup?

Michael Jackson. We both have a little bit of an obsession. Our conversations are often peppered with “CHIMONA!” and “heeeehoooo!”

Alice In Chains, early NIN and Stone Temple Pilots remind me of my husband. Actually any grunge rock from the early 90s (when we met) and anyone that performed at the early Lollapaloozas that my husband and I went to together. Cracker Man by STP especially because he used to sing it to our oldest son when he was a baby.

@deni You just cracked me up with CHIMONA!” and “heeeehoooo!” :P

deni's avatar

@jonsblond hahaha! everytime i say/hear “chimona” i crack up…tis hilarious :)

Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, the first Pussycat Dolls album and some classical music/opera all remind me of my SO (basically because they’re the only ones that we actually have a similar opinion on). He does a funny impression of Barry White which makes me giggle so everytime I hear Barry White on the radio I think of my SO and there are a few songs that remind me of him basically because of times I have been with him when the song was playing although there are no real stories to go with those times.
