Have you seen the new channels on Roku?

Asked by scamp (13149points) November 28th, 2009

I have a Roku player so I can watch my instant netflix movies on TV instead of being stuck at my computer and watching them on the smaller screen. They have just added 10 more free channels, and I’m pretty excited about it.

Do any of you have a Roku? What do you think of the new channels? I think this new service will eventually give the cable and sattelite companies a run for their money once it takes off. What are your thoughts about this?

Sorry, I should have included a link, so you could see what it is. it’s pretty cool! I take it with me when I visit at a friend’s house, so we can watch movies on it. it’s really simple to hook up. I pretty much just plug it in and it’s ready to go!

But you still have to have either a Netflix account or pay for movies through Amazon. Does this replace watching subscription viewing on a laptop or on your computer monitor? It’s like a DVD player for subscription real time services?

I love my Roku. The new channels are great, my favorite new channels are Pandora and Facebook photos. If Roku can secure Hulu or a similar service than we’d be talking a real run for the money against Satellite and Cable. Love watching Netflix streaming especially in HD and that alone was worth the one time cost of $99.

@PandoraBoxx You don’t have to have a Netlix or amazon account for the free channels that were recently added, but you do need an account with Netflix if you want to watch Netflix movies instantly. You can choose your plan. The cheapest one is $8.95 a month. You can choose to either have movies mailed to your home or wattch the ones that are available online instantly, or both. It is completely user friendly service, and you can customize it almost any way you want. You can cancel at any time, and even put your account on hold whenever you want.

I have amazon linked on mine, but I haven’t used them yet.

The new channels are free. You don’t have to have any other service to get the free channels. You only have to register and link your Roku with the individual channels to use them.

@limeaide Those two are my favorites as well! I set pandora to soothing music, then set the sleep timer on my TV, and fall asleep much easier now! I also like Flickr, because their slideshow titled “Interestingness” has some great pictures on it. when I tuck into bed for the night, I watch a slide show until my eyelids get heavy, the switch to pandora, and I fall asleep much easier now. i have found a great solution for my insomnia!

I’m a little slow on the uptake, but this sounds really cool!
