If you realized that you had a counterfeit bill and did not know where you got it,would you take the loss or would you pass it on ?

A family friend named Marcie went to the bank, and was given, by the teller $200 in twenties.
She went and tried to spend one of the twenties, and was told they were conterfeit.
She returned to the bank, went to the same teller, and the teller told her that she was sorry, but the bank would not be responsible for it, even though the teller remembered giving her the money.
She called my Mom, and told her what happened, and my brother chimed in with “Call the police! The bank is giving out conterfeit money!”
Marcie told the bank that she was calling the police, and the bank immediately turned around, and repaid her with good bills.
(btw, it was Bank of America)

Yes. Jerks passed them to me at a garage sale. The bank told me about it when I tried to deposit it. It was a pair of $20’s. Could have been worse I guess.

Yes; we’ve took a few at a business ; BUT the bank gave us the pens for checking the bills .. so we didn’t get anymore that I am aware of.

No, luckily. In Argentina a number of my friends got stuck with counterfeits from all sorts of different places, even banks & ATMs, so I started quickly trying to learn: most common ways to end up with counterfeits, ways to tell real from fake, how to handle it if someone gives you fake bills. I would ask everyone I talked to about fake currency to beef up my knowledge. Now I consider myself more or less an expert in avoiding fake pesos.

Yeah while a student in school I worked as a teller at BofA too…any bank who issues them is supposed to take them back, and get this: they’re not required to exchange them for good bills. That case that @filmfann mentioned is an exception. We used to get merchants who would turn in counterfeits unbeknownst to them…they would just lose out because we were required to remove them from circulation.

Funny thing is, years later, I had (even somewhat recently) dreams of counting wads of money and being handed crazy counterfeit bills, bills that made no sense (like a 21-dollar bill), and they were vivid dreams?! I wonder what that meant?

Funny story: My mom sent me money via Western Union and I went to the Krogers to get it. I got $300, I went straight to the bank to deposit it and while I was waiting in the drive thru, they called my name and told me that the 3 $100 dollar bills I had just tried to deposit were all counterfeit. Luckily I screamed, “What?!?!?” and when they realized I wasn’t aware of them being counterfeit they didn’t arrest me. Although, I had to go back to Kroger and inform them of the situation. Turns out the girl who helped me, gave me the money from $1,200 worth of counterfeit money someone had used when sending money through western union. Needless to say she got fired.

I got a counterfeit twenty dollar bill as change once at Starbucks. I found out it was fake when the cashier at Carl’s Jr. ran one of those pens for testing over the bill. I walked back to Starbucks, told them it was a phony, and they replaced it no questions asked. This one passed muster at Carl’s Jr.

Had a badly damage 50 dollar bill. Took it to my bank and they gave me another.

We get them at work from time to time. Most of the time people trying to use them have no idea they’re fake. We have to keep them and turn them over to the police, so the person just looses it. We usually let them have their food for free to try and soften the blow a bit. It doesn’t seem fair, but it wouldn’t be fair to pass it on either.

Sometimes, though, someone will come up, give you the money and when you start to check it, they take off immediately, not waiting for change. Those people know they’re passing off fake bills.
