Has anyone been on a drug that dumbs you down?

Asked by faye (17857points) December 22nd, 2009

I take gabapentin and feel like my IQ tanked! I have to think to find the right words-[sometimes it’s like I’m playing Charades]. I wander about my house wondering what I’m walking around for. Now, I’m only talking about prescription drugs!!!

When I was in high school, I was on an anti-depressant that made me ridiculously sleepy. Scrawled some notes in class that I could not decipher the next day and I could barely keep my eyes open. They were just random scribbles. Eventually stopped taking them, haven’t looked back.

I take Gabapentin and it doesn’t make me any dumber than I already am. What’s your dosage?

Finds Hypocrisy a better sedative

What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we’re not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too.

Marijuana? As far as prescribed drugs, I was on Geodon, which is an anti-psychotic (I’m not psychotic, but did have an episode when I was taking mass loads of Adderall), and I felt like a walking zombie. Same with most anti-depressants I’ve been on.

Hmm, I didn’t feel dumber when I was high, I just felt happy, giddy, and like a much more fun person. I had interesting conversations with people about my research, and some other topics, too.

Claritin makes me feel like someone has turned off certain parts of my brain, so that I access certain information that I know is in there somewhere.

@jamcanfi74 and @Freedom_Issues: Marijuana has the opposite effect on me.

@faye thanks
@petethepothead I’m not surprised you said something like that. :)

I don’t smoke weed anymore because I just felt like a moron the whole time! I like being energetic and happy. As far as prescription pills the ones I always took made me a genius, but I liked them a little to much so I don’t take any pills anymore.

Alcohol?

Drugs? no.

I love weed, and I’ll profess its benefits left and right, but I won’t lie, I’m stupid when I’m high. Just plain stupid. I’ll put Chinese food still in the folded boxes in the microwave, y’know with the metal bars on ‘em? I just get dumb.

Fluthermucker's avatar

@Anon_Jihad That qualifies. And that’s why they call it DOPE!

@eeveegurl – At one point in high school when I was manic (bipolar), I was being tranquilized, and I could hardly stand up

@faye I actually take twice that. It might be that you’re a little sensitive to it. Are you taking anything else?

I’ve taken many drugs that give me jello-brain. Any anticonvulsant makes me forget words and say ‘uhhhhhhh’ about three times a sentence. It’s very common and can partly be controlled a bit by spreading out your dose or taking it right before bed.

Trileptal gave me jello-brain. Neurontin gave me the shakes until it reached therapeudic dose and my body adjusted- then it just gave me jello-brain. Lamictal and Depakote did the same thing. Each one was bearable to a point- but needed some dose tweaking to find the best balance of effectiveness vs jello-brain.

Tranquilizers, like Thorazine, are simply doing their job so I don’t expect anything different from them.

Anti-psychotics (AP’s) can make me groggy depending on which one I take and when I take it. Geodon made me groggy so I took it right before bed and that helped. Invega gave me horrid headaches so I split the doses. Seroquel made me eat sugar till I could burst and then knocked me out so I simply stopped taking it.

Yes…I was prescribed Levaquin for a urinary tract infection…I couldn’t think clearly that whole week.

faye's avatar

@loser Yes i’m on other drugs as well. My doctor said some people react. I was Stoned with a capital S the first few days. I’ll keep the jello-brain, [thanks gemiwing, good term]], because the pain control is good. I just wondered how common it is.

Most benzodiazepines like xanax and valium dumb me down. I tend to misplace things like keys, money, and drugs then forget where I put them while benzo’ed out. I’ve noticed a lot of people using them recreationally then acting dumb and making dumb decisions.
