Dog sitting on a nail and howling story: do you know a similar one?

Asked by chrispayne (22points) December 29th, 2009

Have you heard the story about a dog that kept sitting down on a nail and howling? Why didn’t it get off the nail? It didn’t hurt enough! What other story is similar which I can use to teach people that unless they experience enough pain in their current job, relationship, health issue, parenting issue, they won’t necessarily do anything about it.

For the first several months that I got my dog ; he’d dig up bricks and throw them in the air and try to catch them….

Then; they hit him in the head and he’d yelp and look down at them as if to say , “I only wanted to play .” and then he’d do it again , and again….

…I don’t know any stories as such… but I know that I often feel this way about my ailments, my mentality, the depression….and feel instinctively food is the answer…that if I went all raw food, high vit etc… and ultra changed my life… no alcohol, no sugar, no yeast, no wheat, no met, no diary… etc… i might actually get better… but I don’t…I don’t because I want it to be easier to get better… it’s easier to stay in pain perhaps? I don’t know…I’ve not tried it because it seems just too hard…but why… the known is better than the unknown? better the devil?.... I want the guarantees…before I commit…

A man was surprised when he found himself face to face with St. Peter at the gates of heaven. He was angry, hurt, and indignant that he had died after having so much faith that God would save him from the floods, and so he demanded an audience with God.

“God”, he said, “Why in the world am I here? It wasn’t my time to die, but you let me drown! I thought you were going to save me. Why didn’t you save me – I had so much faith!”

God said, “For heaven’s sake, Mack, while you were on the roof of your house I sent you a life raft, a boat and a helicopter, and you refused to go! I help those who help themselves. What did you THINK was going to happen?”

Moral of the story: If you don’t help yourself, nobody is going to carry your dead weight, except that one last time.
