What makes your favorite animal your favorite? What about that animal makes it number one on your list?

Asked by Spinel (3220points) January 6th, 2010

It’s a common question: “what is your favorite animal?” What I want to know is, why that animal is your favorite. What quality (or experience) of(with) the animal makes it prominent to you?

The leopard wins first place on my list. It’s a beautiful, powerful animal. The leopard may not be top cat on the savanna, but they sure know how to survive and thrive. I am most amazed by the cat’s hunting skill and tree climbing ability (not to mention their strength).

So, what about you? Why is your favorite creature your favorite?

Dolphin.

Just heard on the news that (apparently, after some scientific research – ugh) they are considered the most intelligent after humans, and before chimps and elephants.

Dolphin.

I just say the word and I immediately feel calmer.

I love them, I love the sea, I love nature I love anything to do with water, from swimming and diving, to sports and boats.

Saw them in the wild once, in the amazon. Pink dolphins.

I’m giving you a GQ, and I don’t mean the Gentleman’s Quarterly magazine.

The owl, for its surrounding symbolism through the ages.

Common Loon.

Their call is eerie, haunting and calming. They also get to spend their summer days on a northwoods lake. bastards

Hands down, a manta ray. The coolest thing I have ever done was dive with a school of them. They are unbelievably big when you are next to them, and they are beautiful creatures. While feeding they do sort of a backflip in the water and catch plankton. After I saw them like that, I was hooked.

Beavers. I love how industrious and clever they are. They live in families where the older kits help raise the young ones. Through sheer doggedness they can fell trees over fifty times their size- then drag them bit by bit back to the lodge.

Plus their nose plugs itself- how freakin cool is that?

I love watching them swim too. Here’s an animal, a furry animal, that shouldn’t be at home in the water yet it is. It evolved to meet the demands of aquatic life. I love watching them glide through the water too. I always think of them as having a ‘flappy paddle gear box’. heh

Check out this baby

It only takes six penguins to take down a polar bear, so i’m gonna go with the penguin.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities I enjoy watching manta rays “fly” through the water, with that powerful grace.

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities It’s funny you chose that – as it has evoked wonderful diving memories – off the coast of Key Largo – my first encounter with the Rays.

My dog, Mikey. he is a seven year old border collie and has the IQ of a four year old child. he is the most intelligent dog i have ever owned. Mikey is truly amazing. he herds everything. a three year old child was running to the road and Mikey took out and herded him back to safety. he did this on his own. Mikey is a great protector of my wife. my wife is Mikeys master. Mikey is the best burglar alarm money could ever buy. when we are gone, Mikey protects everything. our house, the neighbors house and children. Mikey weighes 65 pounds and is all muscle. Mikey knows his position in our life and would gladly give his life to protect us. how could you not love a dog that loves you so much? Mikey is a Pedigree dog food dog. he receives only the best of food and care from us. and, he deserves every bit of attention we give him…..lots of exercise and playtime. he loves it.

I rather like cats, largely because of the way they appear to have complex, almost humanoid personalities. The rest can be boiled down to the general appearance.

@Nullo 100% agreed.

Mountain Goats…they chill in the most beautiful mountainous places, have no natural enemies, are herbivores and are just plain badass.

Giraffes have always mesmerized me with their interesting gallop, unusual body structures, incredible eyelashes, and hilarious expressions – especially when they’re eating.

The kiwi bird, because it’s not like a regular bird, and it kinda looks like a kiwi fruit with legs and a beak.

My dogs, they’re always happy to see me, always eager to go anywhere anytime, always willing to play, never ever get cranky or miserable.

What’s that line something like, if only I could be as good a human being as my dogs think I am!
