Do I tip a stylist who is an owner?

Asked by kruger_d (6231points) January 18th, 2010

My new stylist rents a stall at a salon, but basically owns his own business (not salaried or commission-based). Do I tip him the same as I would an employee? Would you tip a salon owner?

Yes. I tip my barber, and he owns his own shop.

ALWAYS tip. Always.

My mother in law is old school and she said she was always raised not to. I think that was when all stylists were employees instead of self employed like they are now. (Most just rent the booth.)
I always tip my stylist AND her assistant.
MIL is filthy rich and only gives the owner $5.00 and thinks she is being generous. I was so embarrassed last time I took her to get her hair done.

I have heard that you are not supposed to tip the owner, but I did. Just doesn’t make sense to tip stylists when they don’t own their own business, then stop when they do. Hoping someone can explain this…

That wouldn’t be honorable for him. A boss/owner is on superior state that won’t usually accustomed to subordinate treatment. He’ll feel happy if you visit him more often.

If the owner is the stylist, tip her.

There are a lot of hair salons that fail. I’m sure a tip will always be welcomed unless its a very high scale place and the painful price tag covers a lot already. Or unless a tip is already figured into the price.

People don’t tip in New Zealand… anywhere. Restaurants, hair dressers, taxis… nowhere. The only time I would receive tips when working in a cocktail bar was from American and Canadians.

I tip everyone who serves me in any way.

I was always taught no, because they’re making the profit from the business. My husband gets his haircut by the owner of where he goes and this man told him to not tip when he tried. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to tip, it’s just not what I’ve learned.

I had the same stylist for over 20 years and when he owned the shop and rented to other stylists then I didn’t tip but I did start when he moved into a shared shop with others.

I always leave a tip for “the staff,” when the owner cuts my hair. No one’s ever refused me, as Lucille^3 says.

@Judi – I don’t know about not tipping the owner being the “old school” way. Maybe salons and barber shops are different, but my barber owns the shop, and everybody I’ve ever seen in there, no matter how old, has tipped. Maybe your mother in law is just a cheapskate. I was also under the impression that most barbers and stylists (outside of the chain places) were not employees. This stylist rents her spot at the salon and so is self employed, but I always thought that the vast majority operated that way, therefore, owner or not, tip.

If you plan on going back to that stylist, and/or you think he did a good job, then yes. The fact that he owns the place seems a bit irrelevant to me.

Yes i do. He has been cutting my hair for 30 years. I’ve seen his kids grow up. Great guy!

Btw, he is the only barber in the shop. Solo…..
