Have you ever had that one special character you would have loved to meet in real life? Have you ever wished to bring a character to life in the real world? Well, have you?

I’ve written about some characters that I would love to know in real life, but unfortunately one of my problems as a writer is that my most interesting characters are the bad guys. And I wouldn’t really want them to come to life.

I wrote an airship captain once, long ago. He actually started as a metafictional character, charged with ensuring that stories reached the proper ending. Then I sent him into another person’s story that fit him so well that I gave him an airship and a career as a privateer and left him there. Last time we crossed paths, he had gotten out of the privateering business and become a merchant, and was angling for an early retirement.
I wouldn’t want to bring him to life so much as I would like to go visit him.

I unintentionally write about myself a lot. Mission accomplished, I guess.

Generally, characters that I create in stories are extensions of myself. They are real to me, in the sense that i completely understand them, and I dearly wish I could bring them all into this world.

There was a duck named Quigie who saved a girl from detention and house fires in a story I wrote in third grade. He would be useful in school, as we are directly across from the cooking classroom and the detention chamber.

As a rule I love all my characters, even the bad ones. What makes them interesting (probably to me, only) is that each of them has some prominent or debilitating idiosyncrasy that would be really fascinating to observe in a real person.

Other than that, they’ve so far been very normal people. Maybe a little more tolerable than normal people, but still normal.

I created a young woman named “Dusty” that I received a lot of positive feedback on, and had a lot of male friends beg to meet the girl that inspired her creation, I did write her from a lusty point of view. She had long silky jet black hair, puppy dog eyes, a loving personality, and was not ashamed to show off her body.

The part I left out was that she was my cocker spaniel.

Yes, i used to write a lot of anime fanfiction. I have a deep affinity for writing about characters from the Sailor Moon universe. Sailor moon was like my idol when I was a teenager and I still am fascinated with it to this very day.

I’ve written a lot of characters that I would love to bring to life. Some, to be friends. Others, because they just deserve a smack in the mouth.
